It's time to make a confession.

I don't have Helvetica on my computer.

It's not my fault, you see. It really should COME on the machine. The thing came with a ton of fonts already installed, but somehow they left off what is probably the most important one. Figures. It's an IBM, so what did you expect?

But it has gotten to the point where I ( Read more... )

AGREED. Font prices are RIDICULOUS. It's something like $26 for each font of Helvetica. You're just downloading a file, it's not like there's any production cost...I'm all for designers profiting from their work, but why can't it just be a few dollars per person? And I think anything should become public domain after the person who created it dies. That goes for stuff like music, too. You shouldn't be able to sell the rights to a song to someone else, it should just belong to whoever wrote it and once they die it's public domain. I don't know why I should have to pay Adobe or Linotype or whoever to buy Helvetica when Max Miedinger has been dead for like 30 years. There's no reason any other company should be profiting from it.

WOW, that turned into a rant. Hahaha.

Lul! I totally agree with font prices being ridiculous..I wanted to buy Universe, but it's so freaking expensive, and it's not like I'm rolling in dough. Plus, as you said, I have trouble justifying paying insane amounts of money for a tiny, tiny digital file.

Actually, my major beef is with the software prices--Adobe, Maya. Way too expensive for a college student to afford, especially with the rate they've been coming out with new versions. :P

I actually read somewhere that pirating Adobe software is good for the company, because it really encourages widespread use, and that Adobe knows this...hence their software being so easy to crack. :P

Oh man, I know. It's ridiculous. I'm convinced they'd make more money if they made the prices reasonable. It's like...look, you're industry standard. We need your software. You have ZERO competition, but that doesn't mean you can charge whatever you want - because we'll just steal it instead. If the prices were anywhere NEAR reasonable I'd pay up, and I'm sure there's tons of other people in the same boat. They could have made a couple hundred off of each of us, but instead they made zero. How is that the best business plan?! Gragragh.

I did an awesome survey for Adobe a while back regarding their pricing and stuff so I really gave them an earful about this...much fun! Plus I got paid pretty well for the survey, so it was awesome.

I don't have it, either! Damn. I'll have to be careful doing work at home.

Yeah, it's so hard! Especially if you're ever working on anything as a group or something that has to match some other identity so you don't have a choice about what fonts you're using. Also I'm starting to think I want Helvetica for my portfolio website whenever I get around to designing it, and if I do that I'll really have to buy it then because I can't design a website without being able to see it correctly....guh.
