It's time to make a confession.
I don't have Helvetica on my computer.
It's not my fault, you see. It really should COME on the machine. The thing came with a ton of fonts already installed, but somehow they left off what is probably the most important one. Figures. It's an IBM, so what did you expect?
But it has gotten to the point where I need to do something about it. If only it wasn't so expensive! When I bought Kabel I cheaped out and only bought the book weight, so I have no bold or italic or anything else. It's frustrating, but I've been dealing with it. But I feel like I need to at least have the bold and italic faces of Helvetica, and I would really prefer to have the light and black weights too. Well, I'd prefer to have everything - am I the only person who's always had a bit of a fondness for Helvetica rounded? yes? no? - but at any rate, I really need more than just the standard weight.
But, you know...I'm poor! I'm a college student! Since I'll have a fair bit of money from this summer I should probably use some of it for this, but I'll admit it - as much as I love typography, I have a hard time dropping $100 on a few font files when I think of all the books it could buy. Or all the shoes, or all the concert tickets. You know how it is.
One way or the other, though, I need to do something about this atrocity. IBM - why, oh why, couldn't you have pre-installed it on the machine?
