One end of the lake has a grove of aspen. There are many many birds in the grove. Mostly I hear them and cannot find them among the leaves, but a movement at eye-level in a tree by the trail makes me pause. It is a woodpecker. When I went on my retreat to Shambala Mountain Center there were many deer there. They were used to peace- and animal-loving Buddhists, so they didn't move when you walked along the path. They just went about their business, keeping an eye on you as you pass. It was an incredibly peaceful feeling, as you describe here.
