Normally I measure out the servings of cat food I feed the feral cats and bring in any extra at night, to avoid feeding every single neighborhood beastie and to keep the cats from getting fat. But when it's so cold I free-feed the ferals and leave food out all night in case someone needs it. I figure if the opossum wants to eat the cat food when it ( Read more... )

Yesterday afternoon I went for a walk in the baylands. There were egrets, several types of ducks, a vast variety of shorebirds in themes of black & white, & many coots. I really like coots. Here are two pictures I stole off the internet:

Today's find is a robin. It is somewhat stunned and has an injured wing. Injured wings are beyond my abilities, so in a few minutes the robin is going to the wildlife rescue place. I am in the mountains. The Eastern Sierras, to be more exact. The view from this cabin is incredible. I spent parts of the day sitting on the deck just staring out across Owens Valley to the mountains beyond. (The White Mountains & the Inyo Mountains.) We started the year with the same two hens that have been around here for ages. Then at some point last spring a tom showed up & brought with him 4 more hens, bringing us up to 7 birds. Then about two months ago a group of 6 juveniles started appearing, sometimes with the other birds, sometimes on their own. These younger turkey are loud & dumb ( Read more... )
