Marlow had left him with instructions on how to reach her place via Floo, and Hestia had been her ever-helpful, gentle self in giving him a crash course on the finer points of navigating the network (”Clear pronunciation-“), so after taking a moment to put a damper on his jitters, any particularly strong instance of which was still liable to make ( Read more... )

This was going to be a disaster. It was going to be a bloody disaster of epic proportions. Zacharias was going to watch every last episode of Breaking Bad while Marlow was at Hogwarts, and he was going to refuse to even feel slightly bad about it ( ... )

His first reaction was that, compared to the movie poster at the bus stop he'd been passing by for the past month on his way to work, Zacharias seemed a bit...smaller, in person.

Ha.

Even still, he had to admit Marlow had snagged herself a jackpot.

Patrick ran a quick hand through his hand, dislodging a bit more of the Floo dust. "Uh - hi, thanks mate," he mumbled a little awkwardly, then shrugged in response.

"My scale for weird's gotten a bit skewed as of late, so - sorry about the mess," he added, all too aware that he'd essentially dragged the sooty contents of the fireplace right into the middle of their living room.

Then, gathering up the rest of his scattered manners, he wiped a hand on the front of his jeans and extended it out towards Zacharias.

"Pat, by the way. Nice to officially meet you. I, uh - I hope this isn't too much of an imposition," he gestured vaguely towards himself and the home he'd just crashed into.

"Happens all the time," Zacharias shrugged. Grabbing his wand smoothly from the coffee table, he gave it a flick toward the ashes, sending them scattering back to their rightful place. It was such a second nature type of thing, he didn't even think about it.

Shoving up from the sofa, he held out a hand. "Riah. No worries. I figure it's a bigger imposition on you."

Zacharias had always grown up with magic with limited access to the Muggle world until he was older and in Hogwarts, making friends with Muggleborns and Halfbloods who were used to navigating both arenas. If it had been weird enough for him to transition to working primarily with Muggles, he imagined it was only a quarter as difficult as all the change going on in Pat's world at the moment.

"Want a drink?"

Oh. Right. Clearly a 'mess' wasn't so much a mess when you could just-

Right.

It seemed that there had been no shortage over the past few days of his being reminded of just how much catching up and adjusting he apparently had to do.

Some decorative vases perched on the fireplace's mantle behind him rattled together momentarily.

Patrick took a deep breath.

"God, yes, please," he sighed at the offer, quickly rubbing at the crease between his eyebrows, then offering Zacharias a sheepish smile. "Tried as I might to talk the wards into sneaking me a pint, it's apparently frowned upon in the hospital-"
