First of all, as a sufferer of Sciatic Nerve pain, I can tell you that it can very from a dull ache to the most severe pain I have ever experienced. Remember mine got so bad that I blacked out from the pain 3 times. That was the night I got a ride in the ambulance! I would not discount your feelings, but it is difficult to treat sciatic nerve pain. To get relief from the pain, I was on some really strong pain meds - which made me not feel much like eating. I absolutely will put your dad in my prayers, and you, too, as you are having such a rough time. Try to relax, stay in touch with your dad and keep moving forward!

Between the conversation I had with my Mom (who also had sciatic nerve stuff on and off) and now what you've said, I feel a little bit better (not as scared). How long did it take before the pain went away for you? How long did it take for your appetite to come back? Did you have to do exercises or stretching? Has it come back?

Well, I had surgery because I had a disc that had ruptured and part of it had lodged in the sciatic nerve root. Not a good situation. To know how to deal with it, you have to know what causes the problem in the first place. Physical Therapy and stretching are really good and core strengthening exercise is helpful, but that has to be done under the observation of a therapist and with the permission of his doctor. As much as he loves Arizona, going back home to be examined at Mayo is probably a smart thing. While all this is painful and un-nerving to the family, there is no use worrying about anything until you find out if there is cause to be so worried. What was it Mike said about allowing someone in your head rent free? Well, this is sort of the same thing. Concern is natural, obsession is not and it's really unhealthy for you. You want to keep your head together in order to deal with life as it comes. Hang in there. I'm here anytime. Love, Linda

I'm doing a lot better today about it. All of this information is really, really helpful. And it's funny--i JUST said that saying to my mom last night about my thinking!! Just knowing more about it, and how others have dealt with it is making me a LOT calmer. Of course, I'll call him this weekend to see how he's doing and what he's decided. I agree that Mayo is a better place than wherever he's going in AZ, but it's also because his doctor knows him in MN better. My fingers are crossed and I feel better today. Hopefully my dad also does. :)
