So I spent almost all day Friday calling around for info on Medi-cal. Pardon my language, but it was a clusterfuck. The two numbers listed on the official site under "contact us" don't work. One says "I'm sorry, you're calling from outside our calling area. Goodbye." And the other says "The voicemail box you've reached is full. Goodbye." It's ( Read more... )

A lot of people seem to think all Californians are all rich, but yeah, that's not the case at all. There are a lot of middle-class and poor people here too. There's a lot of poor people actually. And Obamacare is great for some (like me) and not great for others, I won't lie. I don't approve of being forced to get health insurance, especially with how crappy most of them were. But as someone who's not well off right now, California does offer more than most states. I was looking at moving back to Missouri (where I'm from) a few months ago, but when I looked into the health insurance options I'd have there, I decided to stay here a bit longer at least. States had a choice whether to expand Medicaid, and MO chose not to (Medi-Cal is Medicaid by the way). With no income, I'd still be expected to pay $250 a month for insurance. That's appalling for something I'm required to get. Here, even before I qualified for Medicaid, my insurance was going to be $20 a month ( ... )

In my state you pay a tax penalty if you don't sign up for it. We have probably one of the more comprehensive programs out there. There are different levels of insurance depending on your income and whether you're single or head of household or married. The cost for the better plans, though..yeech : shudder:

Woohoo for medical coverage! I've been without it as an adult, too, and just knowing it's there if you need it is such a big relief.

Exactly! And I need to get a few issues taken care of, and now I can. I'm so relieved.

I'm going to be off Eric's insurance in the next few months, and am starting to figure out my options. Did you apply through Covered California and were directed to Medi-cal because of your circumstances...or what? Just trying to figure out proper procedures.

That is how I got my kids onto their plan. They determine by your income which plan you qualify for be it medi-cal or another plan, and they will forward your info to them.

Yep, you apply through Covered California and they submit your application and income documents to Medi-Cal if you qualify. In LA county, you get options for either straight Medi-Cal, Healthy Families and LA Care. I believe they told me LA Care works with the Kaiser system ( though it could be Healthy Families). Orange County may be different too.

You dont have to be on a plan to see a dentist. The dentists are through straight medical (Denti-cal)

I knew that part, but I'm worried if I sign up with a plan, do I lose dental? Or can I sign up with a plan and still get denti-cal? I figure I would, but I'm wanting to be sure. I need to see a dentist very soon.

No, the dental is completely separate
I do not think it matters

Ohio has really excellent medicaid stuff as well. PA does NOT. I went from a state whose medicaid cut off for a family of 2 is 20k... to one where it is 5k. YES 5k. Like, how would i afford health insurance on 6k a year?!?!?! Especially when I need the totally comprehensive, fully tricked out health insurance, just to be functional. BOO PA.

Yay for being thoroughly unemployed right now though? I just got back on it this month after going about 6 months without, and so i've been dentisting and psychiatristing and omg <3333333333333. I missed my meds so much.

Some states are really getting screwed... It was a factor for me when I considered moving. I need health insurance for a few things, and in MO, it would be $250 a month even if I didn't have any income. I can't do that.

I can't believe how excited I am about getting health insurance.

Yeah, If I make anything above this 5k cutoff, it's $280 a month for me, plus the deductable and stuff. UGH PA WTF.
