Did you take into account building structure? Why not just get several routers and use WDS to link them all up and use that to get your coverage. That should be less expensive. Maybe construct some high-gain antennaes for them.

I considered multiple routers but I really don't feel like having to maintain multiple pieces of equipment all over campus. More points of failure and more steps to troubleshoot.

Also, with WDS, the drop in throughput is logarithmic with each hop it passes through. I'm trying to cover two buildings across the street, the boys and girls dorms, cafeteria, and 3 faculty homes. The closest buildings are about 400ft apart.

For some of them I may still set up a router to rebroadcast if that turns out to be necessary, but I hope to avoid it. This solution would work well to replace a point to point system with the benefit of having signal everywhere in between as well..

The idea is that this will be funded by some neighbors who REALLY want a decent connection and are willing to chip in to make it happen. ;) Still investigating options though.

Tomato firmware...have you considered using onions instead? They have a longer shelf life and don't bruise so easily.

A cucumber would also work in a pinch (:
