On Definitions. I call my self a designer. I am a designer who sews, and well but not as well as a professional machinist for instance. I design and draft 99% of the patterns I make. So that I am also a technician. I can draw and paint well enough thought not amazingly. I can use and teach CAD and dabble photoshop and similar as well as get ( Read more... )

Well put. I've lived through something similar for so many years in relation to the guitar playing thing.. which happens to be my profession, ten years of my life spent in a Conservatoire...

Reminded me of the early '90s: when publishing houses who wanted cheap graphic designers didn't advertise for that, but for 'Mac operators' instead. So you probably had to sort out network problems, etc, as well as design. Plus ça change.

It is sometimes hard to explain, and I feel a bit like an ass but lately I've been referred to a seamstress several times recently. Which I am, but only as a part of other things I do all under the umbrella of being a designer. This combined with a few small incidents is what prompted me to define what I think I do...

I think you should start describing yourself as 'just all around made of awesome with more talents than much of the population put together' ;)
