There are several cashiers at RbN that are among the most awesome people in the city. I've seen more amazing customer service there than I have in almost any other store in the city. You're completely right there.

I like this place better than WF.

Same.
They have a bigger selection of some things, like vegan cheese. I think they have awesome sales, too.
I'm also in love with the heat lamp at the elevator!

Whole Foods is more expensive, and more than a bit corporate-creepier if you follow their CEO.

My favorite local businesses? Hmm. I grew up going to Donatelli's but now that I'm an adult, I go to Groceria Italiana more I love that place even if it is smaller. It's very different than it was when I was little. I love Lucy's Handmade Clothing in the strip and La Reina in the strip as well. My boyfriend would say Phantom of the Attic for sure.

Restaurants: La Feria, the Quiet Storm, and Del's.

What's your favorite local business? (And yeah, awesome restaurants might as well count here too.)

Kards Unlimited has to rank near the top for me.

after watching Food Inc, and really *seeing* what I already knew, I have vowed to only shop there and and at Trader Joe's. Their prices are higher than GE becuase GE sells products that are mass produced by disgusting corporations so they can sell them cheaply. I'd rather pay a couple bucks more for something that's more nutritious, more flavorful, and better for people and the environment.

You should also consider the East End Food Coop if you're concerned about what's in the food you eat.

They've been locally owned and operated, *and* are non-profit and have been around for a long time.

And if you become a member of the coop, they have member Sundays once a month with 10% off everything you buy. Membership is $100 - forever. You don't have to renew and if you move away you can get that $100 back in full.

I haven't made it there yet--from what I've heard, it's absurdly expensive.

It's very much worth at least one stop in.

I went in almost a decade ago and was pretty put off by it, honestly; had the bad luck of running into an employee who - by the smell - hadn't showered in weeks. I'm alright with that, but would prefer they not handle the produce or baked goods. :-)

When I moved back to Pittsburgh, I've been back to the Co-op a half dozen times, and really like it. Right By Nature is much more convenient to get to - and slightly larger - while the Co-op is harder to get to and slightly smaller.

All of that said, after reading their posted information on memberships (ten years ago and again this year), and after being offered a membership every time I'm there... no one has *ever* mentioned it being a one-time-only fee. shelaghc, are you sure on that, or any idea if it's changed recently?
