I've decided to do my own moving from Swissvale to Brookline. It turns out my trusty and increasingly strapping 13 year-old son will be available and willing to help, that day

The few times I needed a U-Haul, there was never an issue. They had the right sized truck, it ran well, etc. etc. I always used the U-Haul on Rt. 51 at the cloverleaf across from Bill Green Shopping Centre.
I had a heck of a time when I rented one to move to Pittsburgh a few years ago, but that was back in DC. My mistake was renting on a Saturday when everyone else is. There was a huge line that I waited in for about two hours to pick up the truck. So my first advice would be don't rent on a Saturday! Or if you have to move on Saturday, rent the truck a day or two prior to beat the rush.
Even if you reserve it ahead of time, there's no guarantee that the people who had it the day before will return it on time or in usable condition. When U-Haul (or any other truck rental company) doesn't have your truck for you, that's usually what happened. The best bet is to just not move when everyone else is moving, too.
It probably also helps that I'm doing it at the very end of the month, although I'm probably having to compete with a number of university-connected people who have to be here a bit early.
I used U-Haul for a recent move and they did have a van available, but they couldn't drop it off at the site I had asked, so I had to drive out to the Golden Mile Highway U-Haul to get it.
But, they had the van ready right away, the people who worked there were helpful, it was really clean and new-looking and I thought the price was pretty good. This was on a Saturday, too, a few weeks ago. So overall, I'd use U-Haul again.
For previous moves, I rented the largest van possible from a car rental company and removed the backseats. It's a cheaper and easier option than U-Haul, and provides an equivalent amount of space to U-Haul's smaller-moderate options (you can always make multiple trips between apartments if it isn't enough).
That's crossed my mind, but the U-Haul I have in mind for my piddling array of belongings is a 10-footer for only $19.95 plus 99 cents a mile. I'm also planning to haul some boxes in my car.
