Giant Crane

Jul 27, 2009 00:15

As I was sitting tonight watching The Day The Earth Stood Still (which sucked), I found my mind wandering idly and wound up staring for a while at the giant crane on a hill that you can see from Flagstaff, up on a mountain and appearing to the left of the Cathedral of Learning.

What is that crane? I've wondered many times before but never really ( Read more... )

I have to admit, it was a good role for Keanu, playing a character that's emotionally dead. It was a good fit for his general acting.

Oh yeah, honestly of all the things I hated about that movie, Ted Theordore Logan's performance was not one of them. He was actually pretty good. Unfortunately, his character was stuck in a story that made ZERO sense told with effects that looked like recycled leftover concepts from The Mummy.

Dude, that movie was so bad that after an illegal download you would feel like you wasted bandwidth. It especially made me sad because I love the original so much, and while I'm not one of those silly people who expects remakes to match the original (or adaptations to read from the book) I was truly surprised by the suckitude of this one.

One really weird thing popped out at me at the end, too...did they take refuge under the EXACT same bridge in Central Park as used in Cloverfield? If so, that just adds to the lame rip-off-ness of the film.

Up on a mountain? Not sure about that. I was thinking it might be the crane they are using to construct the new hockey arena downtown, but I'm not sure that fits in with the topology (?) you describe.

Not quite. The people below who are saying it's the one being used to build the VA hospital are probably right.

Could it be the giant crane kind of behind the Pete they're using to build something or rather up by the VA hospital?

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's the one being discussed. I live in Oakland and when you're over by Phipps, that's how that one would appear relative to landmarks. The "mountain" is The Hill District basically, up by the VA.

Yes, that's it! Now that you say where it is I looked it up on Google Maps and found the shadow of the thing across a building next to the VA: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=va+hospital&sll=40.446233,-79.964928&sspn=0.002115,0.003439&ie=UTF8&radius=0.09&rq=1&ll=40.446269,-79.964429&spn=0.002115,0.003439&t=h&z=18

Wow, that's big!

I never finished watching the original (on my list!), so I haven't touched the new one.
