Where to find great pizza?

Jun 13, 2009 16:26

My parents are coming up from AL this coming weekend, and have requested that we go out Saturday night for some really good pizza.  So, where do you suggest we go?  I live in Butler County, but don't mind driving wherever.  Problem:  they're old, and complain about stupid things, so preferably somewhere fairly clean, with no smoking, and no loud ( Read more... )

This is true. Particularly if you get a lot of meat on it. We normally mop up the puddle of grease in the middle with some paper napkins before dishing out.

I'll throw in Piccolo Forno on Butler Street in Lawrenceville. It's a bistro, and not especially cheap, but as someone who lived in Italy for two years I can say the pizza, which is made in a classic wood oven, is second to none in Pittsburgh for authenticity.

Butting in to ask - how cheesy is their pizza? My mom grew up next door to an Italian family and she's always looking for pizza like they made, which was apparently not very cheesy at all.

It is not at all cheesy like, say, Mineo's. It has a delicate flavor, and a thin crust, like the pizzas they make in Northern Italy.

Has your mom tried Azzeria either on Banksville rd or in Cranberry on 228?

Beto's is quite win -- Assuming you like pizza that they throw the cheese on cold onto. A lot of people are not big Beto's fans, but I am from beechview so I am biased :-P
The re-modeled place is awesome inside. Oh and best hoagies in town IMHO. Quite clean and much 'fancier' than before.

I love Beto's, but I hate the remodel. I concede that it's well-done, but I liked it when it was (and I say this with much love) a shitty hole in the wall.

Dunno if you'd mind take-out, but Pizza Plus in Butler is awesome (but they don't have a dine-in area).

Also, Domenico's on Rt. 19 in Cranberry (their big restaurant, I can't speak for their takeout satellites) has pretty kickass pizza as well as an amazing full dinner menu of Italian food as well as sandwichy stuff. They're non-smoking and they never have live music (although the restaurant itself is a bit "live", so it has the potential to get a bit loud just with the customers talking and whatnot). Plus, they have 20 beers on tap and over 100 bottled micros/imports (plus your basic American beers).

Where is that one in Butler? I know I've seen it, the name sounds familiar...

Pizza Plus is on New Castle Road, across from Point Plaza (the one with the Drivers' Licensing place).

Speaking of Butler, people used to love Opie's on Route 8 between the mall & Goat Ropers. I've heard rumblings that they've gone downhill though.

Opie's is nowhere near as delicious as it used to be.

If you are looking for somewhere much closer then downtown, I have a few suggestions.

J&S in Natrona Heights is amazing always. Either location is fine, the one in the actual plaza is a bit nicer dining wise however.

And down by the river in Tarentum there is a new place called Ralphie G's. It's take out only, but it is RIGHT near the park so you could dine outside. The pizza is different, but VERY good. The crust is more like a garlic bread stick then anything else. Lots of cheese and nice sauce. My whole family agrees on it and that has never, ever happened.

I'd always wondered about J&S. I always mention trying other places, and my husband is like, "Why would we go there, when Fox's is so close?" *grumble*

I'm one of the few that really hate Fox's so I share the grumble!

J&S is a lot more traditional then a lot of the pizzas around here. It's more like what you might find at a place up New York: thin crust, sauce, no obscene amounts of cheese. There are two locations so close together, the reason is a family feud. They split up years ago, so there is some fun back story, ahaha.

I prefer the one that is near the bar and mini-mart rather than the one in the plaza personally, but that one is easier to get in and out of.

I had also wondered why there were 2 so close. Interesting! Yeah, we're pretty close to there. We generally eat at Kings. It drives me crazy, with so many other places around, but my husband is a creature of habit, and doesn't like to travel or try new things. He's like an 80 year old in a 30 year old's body. =]
