life in panther hollow

I find the idea of living in one of those houses down in Panther Hollow kind of appealing, but I've never talked with anyone who's actually lived there. Is it noisy from students who live nearby? Are the trains overwhelming?

I loved it down there actually... I thought it was very quiet as it's predominantly a neighborhood full of older residents. The trains really didn't bother me that much and it was a good experience over all.

When I lived in Oakland that was my favorite place to walk around in when I needed "quiet time" but didn't really want to be in the woods.

I had friends who lived down there and they liked it. This was over 10 years ago, though.

I see wild turkeys down there all of the time now.

If you like turkeys...!

The wild turkeys are one of the more charming attractions of living in Pittsburgh. I see them fairly often along Commercial Street that runs next to Frick Park. I didn't like it, though, when a flock of them was crossing the road (to get to the other side) while I was driving through and several unknowing fellow motorists were behind me, honking.

I'm still kinda new here, just two years in the 'burgh. I found Panther Hollow only because someone recommended the parking lot. Where the heck is The Run? Sounds like a good title for a fifth-dimensional sci-fi flick.

Four-Mile Run -- Sort of "the other side of Panther Hollow." Home of Big Jim's Restaurant among other things.

If you've ever been stopped on the Parkway East outbound between Bates St and Squirrel Hill, looked over the edge and seen houses WAAAAAY down there, that's the Run. The previous poster was right though, the houses down there aren't much to look at, but everyone I've met down there has been super nice. Big Jim's is great cheap eats, but all your clothes will smell like fryer grease when you leave the place, and the portions are super-sized.

The thing I always wonder about with the Run and Panther Hollow is runoff. Like all the rain water that falls above it has to go somewhere, and I assume it has to get where its going by getting past these houses somehow. Just seems like you'd be dealing with constant flooding in either of these places. I'll tell ya this: I'd get flood insurance if I lived there. Fo' shizzle.
