I made these two dolls for some friends who had to undergo surgery recently. They're little sympathetic healers, bringing love and "get well soon" energy to the recipients.
These are so awesome! I just love the details and they really do look so comforting.
These are a little different from the large homemade doll my grandmother gave AJ after her heart surgery. It has long blonde hair and blue eyes just like her. It also has a pocket, outlined with embroidered sutures, where the heart is supposed to be. There's a removable heart (!) that slides in and then the heart pocket closes with velcro.
My grandmother had nothing but good intentions, but the removable heart part was a little creepy and the "sutures" were too rustic, not what I wanted to be reminded of. When I was 6, I split my forehead open and had to have several stitches. My grandmother took my most treasured doll and drew big stitches across my dolls forehead with a permanent marker. I was so angry.
