I had a troubling experience today. I went to a performance that I thought was a play and it turned out to be an interactive thing ( Read more... )

Nope.

My company did a Murder Mystery Theater thing one year, and I wanted to crawl under a table for the entire performance. Hate it. haaate it.

I can't figure out what the difference is, except that at a LARP I'm prepared for it and not suddenly turned from audience to actor without warning.

I hate it if I'm not prepared for it. And it seems that if there's going to be somebody picked or heckled, it's going to be me.

It doesn't happen to me nowadays, but when I was a kid any costume character within twenty miles was guaranteed to pick me out of an audience. Mom confirms this. I have no idea why it was always me, but they left me with a blinding terror of being caught off-guard in front of a crowd.

I've only been to one "interactive" theater performance, and all that seemed to mean was standing for two hours and being pushed a lot. I can't say it was my favorite, but it's not anxiety inducing for me.

I'm only commenting in support, since you know I feel the same way. I hate it so much that I won't even GO to interactive theater things. And God forbid I win a raffle or something. I DO NOT WANT TO GO ON THE STAGE.

And if they say, "Can I get a volunteer," let me tell you whose hand will not be up.

I knew you'd get it. We've talked about this before. Last time they had door prizes at a work party nighthob had to go collect mine for me.

I don't like it if I am surprised by it. If I know what it is going in I am fine, but getting surprised by that sort of thing annoys me. I however not dealt with it much. Partly because I am little paranoid and will not go to a social situation where I don't know exactly what it is and what the "rules" are. That is sort of a sad commentary on me but I never professed to be one of the cool kids.

It has nothing to do with the cool kids. It's disorienting for anyone to be called out in a public situation without knowing the rules. The rules let us know how to behave.
