It was a measure of their friendship that Billy was waiting when Dom arrived, tired and depressed at two in the morning.

"Sorry I didn't call," Dom murmured as he stepped into Billy's open arms and hugged him. "It was just too..."

Billy kissed the top of his head and guided him gently into the living room. "I know."

"How could he do that?"

In the following days Billy would share his exact thoughts on the matter of Wayne Rooney, Manchester United players in general and the England team's stunning ability to choke right on cue. Now was not the time for that however. Now Dom needed comforting.

"I don't know Dommie," he purred, rubbing soft circles on his back. "Tea?"

Dom nodded. "Sorry."

"What for?" Billy asked producing a cup of sweet tea as if by magic.

"Being such an idiot."

"Don't know why you'd start apologising for that at this late stage."

Dom slapped at him ineffectually and leaned heavily on him. "Bastard."

"Hey, hey. Who made you the tea?"

"And I'm very grateful for it."

"Spare room's all made up."

"Is it alright to just sit for a while? Do you need to go to bed? You can, I'll just..."

A whimper followed by an extended wail from the baby upstairs drowned out Billy's answer and he patted Dom's knee instead. "Hold that thought."

Dom finished the tea and kicked off his shoes, then relaxed back on the sofa and closed his eyes.

"You asleep?"

"No," Dom murmured, mouth curling into a smile as he felt Billy return to the space next to him. He didn't open his eyes. "Is the little fellow ok?"

Billy laughed softly. "He certainly seems to have perked up. What do you think of your Uncle Dom Jack?"

Dom's eyes sprang open and he was confronted with a wriggling baby, all wide eyes and outstretched arms.

"Jesus, look at that."

Billy couldn't hide his smile as he pressed a kiss to his son's head. "Yeah your Uncle Dom's an idiot, but we're keeping him."

"Shit, I'm sorry," Dom said, blushing furiously. "And now I'm sorry for saying shit too. Twice." He tentatively held out a hand and felt his chest tighten as Jack's tiny fingers wrapped around one of his.

"Take him," Billy said, already moving his son into Dom's arms. "See he likes you already."

"How could he not? I'm cool Uncle Dom. I'm the one he's going to come to when you won't buy him a motorbike."

"Yeah he'll have you wrapped around his finger alright."

"I'm used to that with you Boyds. Always have to get your own way. I wouldn't be surprised if yesterday wasn't all an elaborate plan to get me here faster."

"It would take more than I have to buy off the England team Dommie. And I had every faith that they would bottle it and give me a few extra days with you. I should send David Beckham a thank you note."

"Your daddy's forgetting the rules Jack," Dom whispered as the boy prodded at his nose. "He thinks you've softened me up enough that I won't start crying at his cutting remarks."

Billy leaned against Dom, resting his chin on Dom's shoulder and raising a hand to stroke his son's head. "Well daddy knows Uncle Dom better than he knows himself so I'd say that daddy was right in this case."

Jack finally settled against Dom's chest and within a couple of minutes was fast asleep.

With a yawn, Dom rested his own head against Billy's and closed his eyes. "We'll win next time."
