[It's early in the morning at the van der Bilt household, and Taiwan is up at the crack of dawn.  Today's an important day for her - Double Ten Day, which is her national day and the anniversary of the Wuchang Uprising that led to the establishment of what would eventually become her national government.  She's up on the roof as the sun rises,

So... I've been thinking lately.

"Hmm? About what?"

[She smiles up at the sky, watching the last couple of fireworks lighting up the night.]

... About Al.

[Taiwan's posture freezes up a little just for a moment at that, but she figures it's okay if May Lee's the one breaching the topic.]

"...What about him? Is something wrong?"

... I think it might be best for us both if we go back to being friends.

... I just dunno how to tell him this. I have trouble even saying it myself.

[Taiwan has no idea how to feel about this, and it shows on her face. She's not sure whether to feel confused, awkward, happy, guilty for feeling happy, relieved, or anything in between. So it's probably pretty hard to tell exactly how she's reacting to this one.]

"What happened? Did you guys have a fight or something?"

-May Lee sighs... then gives a slight smile.-

Not at all. I still love him, but... I've just been thinking a lot on what that love means.

'If you really love someone, you have to let them go, and if they come back, it was truly meant to be.' That kind of thing?

Something like that, yeah. I know that it's probably best that we not be so close right now. The future is so uncertain...

I think he'd get it if you just told him that. He'll probably try to argue it with you at first, but he's a pretty understanding guy. I'm sure he'd come around.

I hope so... for being the kind of person I am, I have a lot of trouble being honest with feelings on a deep, personal level like this... it's probably why all of my relationships fail.

"You shouldn't blame yourself for it. You're a really great person, May Lee. Somebody's gonna be really lucky to have you someday."

[Smiles in what she hopes is a reassuring manner, putting a hand on her friend's shoulder.]

"Just because it hasn't worked out so far doesn't mean it never will, right?"

Yeah, but... I have to wonder if I can do it. If I can really tell this to him. I know the moment I look into those big blue eyes, I'm going to lose any and all will to do this.
