Summary: “All families fight.
Sunlight
He stands staring out of the window, white knuckles emphasising his vice-like grip on the bench.
He knows he has to go back eventually, yet his feet don’t move.
He wants to cry but that shows weakness.
He wants to be able to hold his tongue but he’s been wishing that for years.
He wants to scream but that brings attention. He’s already had too much of that.
The voices suddenly get louder but become muffled again almost instantaneously. He knows somebody has followed him but he doesn’t turn around. He doesn’t want to start shouting again. If he stays silent perhaps they’ll leave. He promises himself that he will not get into another stupid fight. Not tonight anyway.
He follows the sound of the footsteps and knows they are right behind him. His gaze has drifted to the bench, not wanting to see who has come to chastise him now.
A pair of warm and familiar arms wrap around him. A head is placed on his shoulder and places a kiss on his neck. They mould themselves around his hunched figure, projecting warmth and comfort around him like a shield. He stands straighter and feels his comforter move, keeping their bodies in contact, putting a barrier between himself and the noise from the other room.
He looks at the window again. This time he is not looking at the rain, not noticing that it has lightened considerably or seeing the small ray of light that has pierced it’s way through the clouds.
All he sees is the head resting on his shoulder. It offers him a small smile. He accepts it gratefully and returns it with one of his own.
He sighs- not a sigh of despair like before but one of contentment. He leans his own head against the one attached to his shoulder and places his arms on top of the ones wrapped around his waist.
How long they stand there he doesn’t know; nor does he care. He is willing to stand there forever.
The noise from the next room gets louder again. A reminder of why he is out here in the first place. He knows this moment of tranquillity is almost over. He must soon face the consequences of his actions.
“Thank you,” he breathes, his voice barley a whisper. The head nods.
“You ok?” He feels the words more than he hears them as more kisses are delivered to his neck, each conveying the same message of love, comfort, and affection.
“I should probably go apologise.”
“All families fight.”
“I know.”
The arms finally unwrap themselves from around his body and the head leaves it’s natural resting place, pausing only to drop a last kiss on the back of his neck.
He turns around and watches the figure move away, stop at the door and flash him a smile that makes him happier and more content than he believed.
He takes one last look out the window and is surprised to realise it has stopped raining, a rainbow is shining in the distance and the sun is chasing away the last of the clouds.
He grins and follows his own ray of sun light back into the front room to face his family and the repercussions of his actions.
Like it? Love it? Loathe it? Let me know :c)
