Author’s Notes:  Here is part 4 of the What Makes a Family series on the Karisverse.  This is all I have done so far, but I hope to get more done in the next few days.  I have no idea how long this story is going to be yet.  Feedback is always welcome.

For the next few weeks, Kris, Adam, and Allison kept the news of her pregnancy to themselves.  They wanted to wait until she had her first ultrasound and they were sure that everything was okay with the baby.  They hadn’t even told their families of the plans to have a baby.

Adam and Kris took Allison to her first ultrasound.  She was only a little over a month along, so they couldn’t see much, but all three of them cried at the sight.  Adam was finally coming to terms with the fact that his best friend was having his baby.  The doctor determined that the pregnancy was moving along just fine.  They all breathed a sigh of relief and knew that it was time to start telling people their good news.  They decided that Karis should be the first to know.  It had been her idea after all.

“Karis, can you come sit with us for a few minutes?”  Kris asked his daughter when they returned home from the doctor’s visit and the sitter had left.

Karis smiled brightly and joined them.  Allison was sitting on the couch, so Karis sat beside her.  Kris sat on the other side of Karis and Adam sat on the coffee table in front of her.  He reached for her hands.

“Baby girl, do you remember a few months ago when you asked about having a baby brother or sister?”  Adam asked.

“Of course, I do…Am I getting one?”  Karis inquired eagerly.

“You are.”  Adam stated with a smile.

“This is so awesome!”  Karis exclaimed as she threw herself into her Daddy’s arms.

Kris and Allison smiled at the two.  Moments like this made Adam question why he had ever been reluctant to have another child.  Karis moved away from Adam and sat back down on the couch.

“Sweetheart, we want to explain things to you.  I know that it might be a lot to understand, but just remember one thing…We love you and a baby isn’t going to change that.”  Kris told his daughter.

“I know.  I’m gonna be the best big sister ever.”

“I’m sure you are.  Listen, this new baby is going to be Daddy’s biological child like you’re mine.”  Kris explained.

“So it has a mama like I did?”

“It sure does.”  Adam replied with a smile to Allison.

Karis may have only been six but she was very perceptive.  She looked from her Daddy to her Aunt Allison.  Allison was smiling too.

“Is Aunt Allison the baby’s mama?”

“I am.”  Allison replied.

“So the baby is in your belly right now?”  Karis asked in wonder.  Allison nodded her head.  “Can I touch it?”  Karis started to reach her hand out.

“You can, but the baby is really little right now.  You won’t be able to feel it move or anything yet.”  Allison explained as she lifted her shirt for Karis to touch her bare belly.

Karis gently touched her stomach and smiled.  Kris and Adam looked at one another.  Their little girl never ceased to amaze them.

“We can show you a picture of the baby.”  Kris told her as he reached for a packet of papers on the table.

Kris took the pictures from the ultrasound out and handed them to his daughter.  She studied them carefully for several minutes.

“It’s a girl.”  Karis stated matter-of-factly as she handed them back to her dad.

“Sweetheart, the baby is too little to tell that right now.  We won’t know what the baby is for a few more months.”  Kris tried to explain to the six year old.

“I know it’s a girl.”  Karis declared again as she got up to go play.

The three adults watched her run over to her toys.  Karis was the smartest little girl any of them had ever seen.  It was hard to believe that she was only six.  Adam hoped that it was a little girl so that Karis wouldn’t be disappointed.  However, he really didn’t care either way as long as the baby was healthy.
