Author’s Notes:  Here is part 5 of my What Makes a Family series.  It has taken me a few days to figure it out.  I still have a few more parts to write and I will post them as soon as possible.  I wanted to post this part because I know everyone was anxious for more of this story.

The last few months had gone by quickly for Adam, Kris, and Allison.  After they told Karis about her baby brother or sister, they had started telling their families.  Adam’s mom had cried for hours when she heard that she was going to be a grandmother again.  Kris’ parents had been okay with it.  Truthfully, they were still coming to terms with the fact that their son was married to a man.  Allison’s family had taken the news the hardest.  They loved Adam and Kris and thought of them as family, but they didn’t understand how Allison could have Adam’s baby and then just walk away from it.  Kris and Adam assured her family that everyone would still be a part of the baby’s life.  It was a strange situation, but they were all going to be one big happy family.

“Lala’s here!”  Karis announced as she ran into the living room with Adam’s mom trailing behind her.

Allison was sitting on the couch.  She had moved in with a guys a few months ago.  She was staying until the baby was born.  She smiled as Leila came over and gently touched her protruding stomach.

“How’s my grandbaby?”  Leila asked as she kissed Allison’s cheek.

“Fine.  Kicking up a storm which should be good for the ultrasound today.”  Allison answered.

“Speaking of…Shouldn’t you guys be heading out?  Where are the boys?”  Leila questioned taking a seat on the couch with Allison.

“Adam’s upstairs getting ready.  He’s worse than a girl, you know?”  Allison spoke with a laugh.

“I know.”  Leila agreed with a giggle.  “What about Kris?”

“He didn’t make it back from New York.  His flight got canceled because of bad weather there.  He should be on a flight sometime today.”

“That’s too bad.  I know he was looking forward to going with to the ultrasound.”

“Yeah, I know.  I told him that we could reschedule it for later this week when he’s back, but he insisted that we go today.”

“You know Kris…He wants to make sure that the baby is okay.  And I’m not worse than a girl.  Allison spends more time in the bathroom getting ready than I do.”  Adam declared as he entered the room.

Adam walked over and kissed his mother.

“Are you ready mama?”  Adam inquired looking at Allison.  She shook her head yes and reached out for Adam’s hands.  He helped her stand up.  “Mom, you know the drill with Karis.  We shouldn’t be too long.  Oh, Karis wants to go swimming, but I told her that she needs to clean up her bedroom first.  It looks like her closet and her toy box exploded in there.”  Adam explained to his mother as he and Allison headed for the door.

“Okay…I’ll make sure she gets it cleaned up.”  Leila told her son as she ushered them out the door.

While they waited for the midwife, Adam fidgeted in his seat.  He was used to the idea that Allison, his best friend, was having his baby.  However, he was still nervous.  The pregnancy had been going great so far.  All the other ultrasounds and tests indicated that the baby and Allison were healthy.  He was anxious because today if all went well they were going to find out the sex of their baby.  He was also a little upset because Kris wouldn’t be there to share the moment with him.

“Come here.”  Allison whispered as she held her hand out to him.  Adam smiled at her and went to her.

He held her hand and she squeezed his.  He rested his forehead against hers.

“I know that you wanted Kris to be here and I’m sure that he’s upset that he’s missing it too.”  Allison spoke as the door opened.

“He was very upset.”  Kris declared as he entered the room.

“Kris, you’re here!”  Adam exclaimed as he embraced his husband.  Kris hugged him tight and then moved back slightly to give him a quick kiss.  Adam returned the kiss and was beaming ear to ear.

Kris removed himself from Adam’s embrace.  He gently kissed Allison’s cheek.  She was smiling as well.  She had really wanted him to be there too.

“How?”  Adam finally inquired.

“Well, the storm broke up and I was able to catch a red eye.”  Kris explained as he wrapped his arm around Adam’s waist.  “I didn’t want to miss this.”

“I’m so glad you’re here.”  Adam whispered before gently kissing Kris’ temple.

A few minutes later, the midwife entered the room.  She got everything set up and began the ultrasound.  As they watched the baby on the screen and listened to the heartbeat, the three of them couldn’t stop smiling.  The midwife was telling them that everything looked wonderful and the heartbeat was strong.

“Do you want to know the sex of the baby?”

“Yes!” All three of them exclaimed in unison.  The midwife giggled a little at their enthusiasm.

“Alright…Well, it’s a girl.”  She stated with a big smile.

Kris, Adam, and Allison were too shocked to say anything.  None of them could believe that Karis’ prediction all those months ago was right.  She had a fifty percent chance of being correct, but she had been so sure about herself.  Adam was glad that they wouldn’t have to tell her that it was a boy.

On the way home from the doctor’s office, the three of them stopped at a bakery and got a dozen cupcakes with pink frosting.  They also picked up 2 dozen pink roses for Leila and Karis.

“So?”  Leila inquired when the Adam and Allison walked in the door.  She and Karis looked at them expectantly.

“Well….”Adam began.

“It’s a girl!”  Kris shouted as he walked in the door with the cupcakes and flowers.

Leila started to cry and Karis just smiled.  Adam walked over and hugged his mom.  She whispered how happy she was to him.  Once Adam released his mother from the embrace, Kris walked over with the flowers.

“These are for the grandmother to be.”  Kris handed Leila the pink roses and gave her a kiss on the cheek.  “And these are for the big sister.”  Kris gave his daughter the flowers and kissed her forehead.

“I told you that it was a girl.”  Karis replied as she smelled the flowers.

“We know, baby girl.”  Adam gave his daughter a hug.

“I know what her name should be too.”  Karis told everyone.

“What?”  Kris inquired as he handed her a cupcake.  Allison was already eating her second one.

“Adison with just one d.”  Karis stated before licking the frosting on her cupcake.  Allison, Adam, and Kris just stared at her.

“Really?  How did you come up with that?”  Leila asked her granddaughter.

“Lala, it’s like the perfect name.  It’s like Daddy’s name and Aunt Alli’s name together.  It’s like how my name is Dad’s name and my momma’s name.”  Karis explained like it should have been completely obvious to everyone.

“It is the perfect name.”  Kris told his daughter.  “What do you think Adam?”

“I think that Adison sounds just right.  Allison, what do you think?”

“It’s a beautiful name and Adison is going to be very lucky to have such a good big sister like you.”  Allison responded with a smile.

Karis smiled back at her aunt and went over to hug her.  After she embraced her, she gently laid her head on Allison’s stomach.  With her head there, she softly talked to the baby.  Kris had teary eyes as he watched his daughter.  Adam pulled him against his body and kissed his forehead.

“I love you.”  Adam whispered into his ear.

“I love you too.”  Kris breathed.
