Summary: Adam and Kris visit Africa.
A week after their anniversary, Adam and Kris embarked on a journey to Africa. They were going to do some charity work. They would be visiting some schools and orphanages. They would also be handing out mosquito nets and medicines to some clinics. It was Adam’s first time in Africa. Kris had been several times and he wanted to share the experience with his husband.
Adam had seen the images and heard the stories. However, none of that could prepare him for being there in person. It was hard to believe that people still lived in the way they did. He wished that he could do more.
On the third day in Africa, they visited an orphanage. Adam was overwhelmed to see how many children were there. Despite their circumstances, they seemed to be happy. They toured around the building and saw kids of all ages. Their last stop was the nursery. As they walked into the room, they saw about 20 cribs with mosquito nets hanging over them. They were informed that all the cribs were full. Many of the mothers had died during childbirth and a few of them had simply given the baby up because they couldn’t take care of it. Adam’s heart broke as he looked around the room. Kris reached out and grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
“What this one’s name?” Adam inquired looking into a crib.
The baby inside couldn’t have been more than a few weeks old. It was tiny, but looked healthy otherwise. It looked up at Adam and Kris with big eyes.
“This is Adeumi. He’s two weeks old. His mother died after giving birth.” Their translator explained to them.
“He’s adorable.” Adam whispered mostly to himself.
“You can hold him if you want.” Someone told Adam.
Adam smiled and reached into the crib. He took Adeumi into his arms. The baby cooed and snuggled up to him. Adam’s heart absolutely melted. Kris watched his husband with the baby. He loved seeing Adam like this. The two men locked eyes. Kris could tell without Adam saying a word that he was in love with the baby.
Adam rocked Adeumi and softly sang to him. The little boy sighed and started to drift off to sleep. Kris walked over and gently rubbed the baby’s back until he was sound asleep. Reluctantly, Adam placed him back in his crib.
