She leans forward beside him, resting her elbows on the rail, which puts a thousand feet of cool capricious air between her clasped fingers and the ground. Wind blows her unbound hair back from her face; short stray threads fanning out from the mass gleam an unexpected, thrilling red-gold, teased to glory by the rows of archaic light bulbs overhead. Her profile in his peripheral vision is softened by those same lights: the warmth lent to her skin subduing the strong raw bones underneath; gentle shadows swallowing the line of her jaw, and the too blue irises of her lowered eyes, and the translucent, threatening edge of her teeth.
