I'm sure it's more squalid there, but it doesn't look that different from where I live. My father spends a lot of time there, Filipinas. I'm like, "Why? Those are amongst the ugliest Asian people?" I guess he sees it otherwise.

We plan to go to India and Nepal next year. We'll see, I guess! The Third World tends to look rather similar no matter its location.

My favorite ever class at Harvard was Travel Writing! I fucking loved that! I would not have known about Paul Theroux before that. The absolute best was Wilfred Thesiger's Arabian Sands and V.S. Naipaul's An Area of Darkness.

I have been to the Philippines and have seen such squalidness. This was back in the early 90's though where i met L.but i did not stay in the city , but a few hundred ,miles north in the Zambales region. a village called Cabangan.

Close by infact ,in one of those colourful taxis they have over there, and then we travelled to the commercial and clean rich area of the city - Makati. The stench was unbelievable though. At least Cabangan was more like paradise.

Quezon City was also another fascinating area of contrasts.
