Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is one of the most densely populated cities on the planet. One square mile (2.59 square kilometres) with around 200 thousand people.

In 2017, a German photographer, Bernard Lang, made a series of aerial images of overcrowding in the absence of civic planning for the city. The aerial lacks in showing the conditions in which citizens live.

According to the BBC, about a billion people live in slums around the world. and 2 per cent of slum dwellers live in an island state.

The capital city of Manila is located on the north-west coast of the Philippines city has a growing business area, residential areas and slums on the outskirts where people live in shacks.

In the poorest areas, numerous families live in makeshift huts along the river. The shacks are built on piles due to frequent flooding.

In 2017 photographer Bernard Lang, decided to take a series of pictures on a theme he considered one of the main in our world, overcrowding.

His research led him to Manila, where colorful roofs of slums ill-gotten from the residues of building materials reminded him of abstract paintings.
The photographer rented a helicopter to fly the town. "From such a perspective, it is possible to see how close the houses are located in a way that they undermine one another."

On the first night of the photographer's stay in Manila, a fire broke out in one of the slum areas. Because the houses were literally pinned to each other, fire trucks have difficulty travelling to the fire site.

The next morning Lang flew to that area. The fire destroyed a thousand houses, leaving three thousand people without shelter. Fortunately, and amazingly no one was hurt.

Fires and floods are constant threats in Manila. The Philippine Islands are located in the Pacific Volcanic fire ring, which means earthquakes and typhoons.

Debris travels to contaminated waters near slums, increasing the risk of bacterial diseases.

There are other consequences of overpopulation in Manila - hunger, poverty, economic inequality, drug-related crime and too much time for sex and making children destined to grow up in dire poverty.

There is no immediate solution to the crisis of overpopulation in the city. According to Time, by the year 2025, the population of Manila will grow by another 3.29 million people.

Lang fears that, in the face of global problems such as climate change and ocean pollution, the overcrowding of the planet has not been given the attention it deserves.

The photographer hopes that his images will attract the attention of the public and the world's leaders.
