The Straight "But, UHHH" Hits

Nov 17, 2008 10:20

I had planned to have a nice playlist of near-embarrassing soft-rock favorites, as per a conversation with archaica and docmanhattan. But laziness and college basketball conspired to slow the playlist down. So perhaps I will do it tonight.

For now, I am delaying actual work by watching these Gap ads and finding each one of them slightly cringe-worthy, so much so that ( Read more... )

See, interestingly enough, there are a couple down there that I wouldn't count as wuss, but I listen to them in the same mood (which also involves a good amount of Marvin Gaye and soul, Billy Paul and the like) - like Merle Haggard? I'm afraid he'll beat me if I call that music wussy! But I like "if we make it through december" on my playlists.

And Soul Coughing's too goofy. Also reminds me of high school and college, when I was SO not wussy.

i have a similar playlist entitled "yacht rock," inspired by the hit web series of the same name. it includes the three ditties i listed before, as well as some ambrosia, toto, and naturally lots of kenny loggins and michael mcdonald.

"this is it" is on there - make no mistake about it - but so is "keep the fire." i am certain you've heard all three of those songs, the titles and artists just aren't immediately identifiable. as soon as you preview them on itunes, you're going to be like, "oh yeah, i remember hearing that while i was waiting on line at duane reade..."

A Fed Ex shipping spot on 42nd street across from Bryant Park is where I first heard "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" by England Dan + John Ford Coley; the two women there thought I was f'in crazy when I asked them what the song was. I mean, they gave me a serious stink eye.

I have a playlist entitle "Yacht rock" that i'd be more than happy to send to you to get your playlist started. it has (among others)

Hall & Oates
Toto
Blue Oyster Cult
Billy Ocean
Fleetwood Mac

It is intended for whenever we next go on an actual sailing trip. Ha ha.

Billy Ocean - i am on the fence about his inclusion, but he'll get on there anyway. this playlist will serve me well on the way to South America, i am sure.

i can't wait to post the playlist tomorrow (or so) - hopefully you will post yours, as well?

i have billy ocean's greatest hits album, so i didn't bother to put him on my yacht rock playlist. i prefer to listen to all of his masterpieces at once, in chronological order.

Magnet and Steel is the ULTIMATE soft-rock jam. As is Ricky Nelson's "Garden Party," the song from the car sketch in this week's SNL.

Don't forget "Magic" by Pilot, "Cats in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin, "Weekend in New England" by Barry Manilow, "Leader of the Band" or "Same Old Auld Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg.

Don't give me a new project!

(And yes, you owe me a mix CD!)

you know why i love you? you so OBVIOUSLY have strange problems.

i missed SNL, sounds like it was actually pretty funny!

which mix CD do you want? the hard rock one, or the soft rock one? none of this is getting sent before mid-December, mind you.

AND ANOTHER THING mediadork November 17 2008, 21:40:54 UTC
SNL was fascinating this week. It was like, "Oh, you're afraid of the gays so you voted for Prop 8? We'll give you something to be afraid of!" Seriously, there was so much man-on-man action I thought I was watching Queer As Folk. Plus, PAUL RUDD!

Of course, you know I possess both Gordon Lightfoot AND Jim Croce box sets, yes?

I would put some 1970s Cat Stevens on there as well, but something doesn't feel right about that. It's like Cat Stevens transcends soft rock somehow.

Oh, and Glen Campbell! "Rhinestone Cowboy," "Galveston," "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," etc.

And don't forget the 5th Dimension! The black Mamas and Papas! I have a two-disc "Best Of" that's fantastic!
