Kid? I thought you were teaching college level. More like a student, right? The kid really is not a kid. As my mother (chinese) would say, "take some responsibility for yourself." The student just stared at the pen instead of taking intuitive and asking around for one?

Not to say that the response of "Mr Cynic" wasn't uncalled for, but there are two sides to every story. It does not sound professional to say the things that you have described in front of the class. That is more of a private "I need to talk to you in the hallway" kind of thing. As he was the teacher in the room, there may have been something about the kid's own tone that came across as disrespectful?
