Where on the internet does fandom live these days?

I'm trying to get back into writing fanfic (don't get too excited; it's pretty slow going), and I've been thinking about the best platforms on which to offer my stories. I know how fast the internet moves, and I want to keep up ( Read more... )

I am very fond of AO3 as a place to post and find fic, but depending on the fandom it can be terrible for actually getting feedback. It really is more of an archive and not a community.

Dreamwidth has a lot of fannish stuff over there - mostly people and communities who uprooted themselves in the face of various bits of LJ drama. some places are stuff fairly active over there, and a lot of fic fests have both a DW and an LJ.

Some newer fandoms seem to live primarily on tumblr. I don't know what's on there for older fandoms like Harry Potter.

I've had a poke around a few places, and I'm not finding many satisfactory answers. I have a DreamWidth account, but I mostly use it to archive my LJ. There is no active Remus/Sirius community on there, and the more general Harry Potter fanfic and slash communities are only moderately active. Disappointing. Tumblr.... I have no idea how that even works. I've had a browse around, and I guess maybe it could be a useful promotional tool. Maybe. I am tentatively excited about posting on AO3. Maybe I'll upload a story there and see what happens.

I'm not really the one to ask about writing, but a lot of community seems to exist on tumblr.

I don't really understand how tumblr works, and after browsing it for fandom stuff, I'm not sure if it's worth trying to learn. Yeah, I am an old lady.

Maybe we should think of it as fandom being pared down to its essence on LJ? Like, this is the core of devoted fans after all the people with short attention spans have jumped off the bandwagon and migrated to other fandoms. A glass-half-full sort of thing, if you will.

So far, the only thing about AO3 that is bugging me (because I am a perfectionist control freak) is that I can't designate a prologue, which throws off the chapter count for the rest of my fic. Bah.

I post here and on AO3. I like the community here and I like the interface and organization of AO3. That's totally specific to BSG, though - I'm not sure where I would post HP fic today. (I do use Tumblr but not much at all for fic. I don't see how.)

ETA: Another benefit of AO3 is that you wouldn't have to make your own Epub or Mobi files. It does it automatically.

Also, for your reference is this handy tool which converts fics from various archives. I love it. It's why my Kindle is 99% fic.

These answers were really interesting. Sometimes I feel like fandom itself - or at least R/S fandom - is dying.

:( Don't say that! I'm going to be writing R/S fic until I'm 90, and I can't be the only one.
