Matt's sister is due to give birth any day (actually, she was due to give birth nearly two weeks ago, but apparently late delivery is very common in first pregnancies) so I feel I can finally reveal the answer to my other mysterious UFO conundrum. It was not a legless elephant, Loz, or a cozy for an iron, Inkwolf. It was in fact one of these

It is apparently impossible not to get clucky when confronted with baby shoes. Even I succumbed.

There have been times when I've seriously wanted to have a baby just so I could justify a baby shoe collection. The concern about little details like signing up to take a back seat in your own life for at least a decade, reclaiming it slowly over the next one, to some degree, assuming you only have the one, and can deal with the questions about making it a little brother or sister before the gap's too big for them to be friends with a straight-faced "no, we wanted it to be an only child, so it could be poorly socialised and spoilt." has so far always been stronger than the broodies, so far.

The broodies, as far as I can tell, reach a peak in your early thirties. I really wanted a baby when I was 31-32. It's not as strong now -- more a kind of panic that I'm running out of time if I want a baby, as opposed to the earlier "OMG babies are so cute and I want one too!" that I briefly felt (literally just for that one year).
