Why I am in UP

Jan 10, 2009 20:00

I’ve been talking to my Lourdes kids these past few days about near-graduation dilemmas, like if they should continue to pursue debate in college, what course they should take, and of course, the biggest question of which university should they choose. Being the pa-star and feeling person that I am, I always say that what they should do is to just ( Read more... )

I know the attachment you get in Diliman. I'm the girl who took pains in choosing UP over Ateneo, and after a week in UP, I don't even know why I considered that other school considering that I got accepted in THE University. I don't care if they have more bar-topnotchers or that they get to send their debaters to Worlds, subsidised. The point is, UP offers much more than an education. You can also tell your kids that UP graduates, regardless of major, are very employable. Yes, Ateneans and other private schools will have help from their administration for job placement, but UP people just... don't need the help! As long as you work hard and remain committed to learning about discipline of choice and about life in general (how broad), there's no place like UP. ♥ (And I know this because five years na akong nandito).

"Yes, Ateneans and other private schools will have help from their administration for job placement, but UP people just... don't need the help!" --- I SUPER LOVE THIS. My kids give me reasons like "Management Engineering in Ateneo = highest ADMU course = secured future", and I just can't make them believe that any other UP course could do the same thing.

As long as you work hard and remain committed to learning about discipline of choice and about life in general (how broad), there's no place like UP. ♥ --- Couldn't say less. But the thing is, they don't seem to fully understand what this means. I dunno, maybe because they're still v young and have different perspectives from us? Or is this what UP has already given us?

Management Engineering? Puh-leeze. They say it's our counter-part for Industrial Eng'g, they don't even take any board exam! They say it's designed for emerging techy industries. Well, my dad work in the semi-conductor industry and his hiring preference of Unis are: UP, DLSU, UST then Ateneo ( ... )

Oh yeah, I always give this example nga pala, I have a high school friend who was enrolled already in Ateneo. During OrSem, she realised it's not the school for her, school was running a week in Diliman already, and luckily nakapag-late-reg pa siya!!! Ngayon, last year na niya sa Mechanical Engineering. Kaya sabay-sabay naming china-chaka ang ang INTACT (yes, my course sa Ateneo na required sa lahat ng first year ang tawag: Introduction to Ateneo Culture. First reaction ko nung nalaman ko ito: WHAT CULTURE????) =P

I ♥ UP (grabe, lahat yata ng post ko ito yung magiging end. =P

Pero if I can reduce my testimony in a sentence, I found myself in UP. CHOZ!!!

I firmly believe that there is no education quite like a UP education. I was lucky because my parents let me choose which college to go to despite my mom's wishes for me to follow the path of my grandfather and graduate from Ateneo. But if I went to Ateneo I would probably still be too cono like I was in HS. Or treat issues as if they mattered to me only when it was national in scope.

I think your Lourdes kids need to see which they value more, education for the right now or education that will last them for the rest of their lives.

"...education for the right now or education that will last them for the rest of their lives."

Love it. And I totally agree. I am hoping that they get to see the light before it's too late. I really feel concerned for my kids. Maybe because I can imagine them in UP as early as now. And they are for UP.

YAY FOR ALL UP UNITS! If anything, I don't think ADMU can be this proud of its provincial units as well. Proof that UP excellence can be seen in all our units! YAY.
