Adam landed softly. He inhaled deeply, enjoying the smells of humanity. It had been far too long since he had come to play on earth. He stalked down the block, following the enticing smells of life. He strode down the sidewalk, heading towards the closets bar. Outside people were smoking cigarettes and talking loudly, their pheromones reeking all over the place. He could heard loud chatter and someone singing. The person was good, untrained even to his ears. It was a young girl who had a nice voice. Adam made his way to the bar and flagged down the bartender. With a drink in his hand, he claimed a stool and swiveled so that he could see the stage. The girl finished her song and the crowd applauded politely. A man in a nice suit and a bright (probably paid for) smile stepped up to the microphone.

"Thank you Lindsey. Now next in our open mic night is a crowd favorite." Everyone started clapping as the man said this. "I think you all know who it is, so why don't you help me welcome Kris Allen back to the stage." The crowd erupted in cheers and catcalls. The man who took the stage also took Adam's breath away. He was shorter than the MC, but not too short. Just right, his mind supplied. He was wearing a plaid shirt, open with a white tee under it. His jeans seemed molded to his body, his Brown hair looked as though he had just run his fingers through it a thousand times. The man seemed perfect to Adam, and all that before he even spoke.

"Hey everyone." He greeted the crowd, his voice like honey. "I have a few new songs to try out and some of my usual. So how about we start with one of the favorites." The crowd went wild again and several people stood and moved either towards the stage area or to the dance floor, all looking expectantly at Kris. To say Adam was intrigued was an understatement. That was until Kris opened his mouth.

As soon as Kris started playing the first cords everyone started going crazy and clapping along, going so far as to sing the lyrics with him. Adam was definitely intrigued. Open mic nights weren't known for such sought after regulars.

Sometimes we fall down, can't get back up

We're hiding behind skin that's too tough

How come we don't say I love you enough

'Til it’s too late, it’s not too late

Adam was hypnotized as the first notes from the man's mouth. The voice was as honeyed as his speaking voice, a balm to Adam's nerves. the crowd danced and sang and Kris just smiled and let them see the man on the inside, the man who was made to make music and share it with the world.

As the song wound down, everyone in the bar's attention was on the small man, entranced by the gorgeous man on the stage who seemed to belong up there. The crowd became rambunctious again, once they knew the song was done. Kris simply smiled and ducked his head as if he truly had no idea how amazing he was.

"Okay, I'm glad that's still a favorite. Okay, now something new. This is something I have been playing around with, I hope you all like it." The crowd stilled any movements, the dancing stopped as everyone's attention was fully on the man, wanting to devour his newest song. The crowd outside all moved in, still staying near the door, but eager to hear the music.  Heads began bobbing after only a few cords.

Is there somewhere that I need to go

And is there someone to teach me how love goes

Cause I can't believe

That this is how it’s supposed to be

I've had enough

Adam was mesmerized. He stared intently at Kris, wanting to know this man. Kris' eyes scanned the crowd and locked onto Adam's for a moment. He sang directly to him.

And I don't wanna believe that love is just a dream

And now we're waking up

So is there someone

To teach me how love goes.

Kris broke the eye contact finally and kept up with the song. People started to move again, the dance floor moving again, though not as lost in the music as before, everyone intent on hearing the lyrics and hearing the song for the first time.

~~

Kris loved coming to the open mic nights at X. He loved the crowd and they really liked his music, more so than the crowds at His regular gigs. They all seemed to like his newest stuff a lot. Perhaps Paula was wrong, his music didn't need testing, it just had been that one, really bad night. Kris scanned the crowd, letting their enthusiasm fuel his performance high when he sees the man sitting at he bar.

He's gorgeous, in an almost other worldly sense. Kris wonders why he's there, at this particular bar, a local college hangout, and not at one of the more exclusive clubs. He could get in easily, looking like that. He locks eyes with him and sings the verse directly to him. He forces himself to break eye contact with the man, knowing he can't serenade him into liking Kris. From the looks the man seems interested, but Kris has always been a bit off in figuring out if someone likes him. He could just like the song.

Kris had moved to LA to make music, but he found himself exploring all the feelings he hadn't acknowledged back home. His mother wasn't surprised when he came out to her on his last visit home. Se had simply patted his head, told him she already knew, and that she loved him. Apparently mothers were born with some crazy gaydar, or in his case bi-dar or something.

Kris finished the song and felt himself flush at the crowd’s reaction. He knew he could create good songs, but he was always shy in receiving praise from crowds like this, who were so willing to give it freely, but also very willing to boo someone off the stage and even out of the bar.

"Okay guys, it's time for a ten minute break, but I'll be the first one up afterwards to give you a few more songs." They all clapped as the bar's sound system kicked in and some top 40 song started. Kris headed to the bar to grab a quick drink. He found himself walking straight towards the unreal man sitting and watching him.

"Great new song Kris. Got any more coming?" Asked Cale as he set a shot of whiskey and a bottle of water in front of Kris as he settled at the bar, right next to Mr. Gorgeous.

Kris looked at the whiskey and raised an eyebrow at Cale. Kris rarely drank, let alone hard liquor, when he was singing. Cale lifted his chin over at the man Kris sat next to in response. Kris nodded and turned towards him, opening his mouth to say thanks, only to find the man staring at him.

"Um, thanks for the drink, man." Kris said, raising the glass in thanks.

"You're welcome. I'm Adam." He said extending his hand. Kris noted the dark blue nail polish and large silver rings adorning his fingers.

"Kris." He shook his hand and tried to suppress a shiver at the feel of Adam's skin against his. Adam inhaled deeply as his eyes drooped slightly.

"Tell me, Kris. Why are you not on the radio yet? You could be very popular."

"Um, I guess I still need to break through, and find a label."

"Bullshit. They are hiding you. I'm just trying to figure out why."
