It's a box wrapped in red paper with little green trees and silver snowflakes; and she stares at it like she's never seen anything like it before. She looks up at her partner and the confusion turns to a questioning look.
One hand goes to his hip, while the other goes to his shaking head, "It's a Christmas present, Bones."
"But, I don't believe in God, nor do I believe that Jesus ben Joseph was anything more than a mere mortal man. So, the significance of Christmas and thus Christmas presents is minimal to me, Booth."
Agent Seeley Booth sighs. Only Dr. Temperance Brennan could turn a simple gift into something so complex.
"Fine," he makes to take the box back, "I'll give it to Angela then."
Brennan moves so that the box is shielded against her body, "Wait. If you went to the trouble of purchasing me a gift than I should at least accept it. I just want you to understand that this has no bearing on my beliefs, or lack there of, towards Christmas."
"Yeah, yeah, I get it. There is no proof of God, so there must not be a god. Blah, blah, blah, whatever. Just open the damn box already," he waves an impatient hand at her.
She tears into the paper with much the same enthusiasm as Parker on Christmas morn and tugs the tight fitting lid off the box. Removing the cotton batting covering the gift, she stops breathing for a moment. Nestled inside the box is a chevron necklace and dangle earring that nearly perfectly match the ring she's been wearing for the last few months. The ring that is all she had left of her mother. "Where did you ever find this?"
"Oh, I just stumbled on it at the mall the other day," he lies. He doesn't want her to know about the covert picture he took with his cell phone or the jewelry designer he found that specializes in recreating antique pieces. He doesn't want her to know that he wanted to create a complete set for her because her family had never been complete.
She's across the room and in his arms before he can even think. She's crying gently and kisses his cheek. Pushing her back slightly, he removes the chunky necklace from her neck and replaces it with her gift. Taking his lead, she removes her earrings and slips the delicate French wires through her lobes.
She sends him a watery smile, "I didn't get you anything."
"It's okay," he slips his arms around her again. And it really is okay, because he's got the gift of her smile and affection and that's a gift so rare and precious that's it is worth more than any piece of jewelry.
