100% - At the age of 22, Mildred Finch learned the hard way that no birth control is completely effective. Roe vs. Wade had just been passed and her roommate and best friend Maureen encouraged her that was the best option. Her Catholic upbringing said otherwise. Her boyfriend of just a few months he was off to Paris to study at the Cordon Bleu before she could even get used to the idea of being pregnant.
2996 miles - With Eddie off to Paris and Maureen only vaguely supportive, Millie found herself done with Dartmouth University. She had her Master’s and the University of California, San Diego had beckoned as a place to get her PhD and to start teaching.
41 weeks - She had a perfect and fairly easy pregnancy. Until one morning, when she woke up knowing something was wrong. By that evening, she cried as she held her daughter’s lifeless form.
1033 plot b - The young priest at the old Catholic Church never blinked an eye as he agreed to bury the unbaptized child of an unwed mother. She and he stood alone in the morning sun as her child was laid to rest in sacred ground.
32p. - The quote came from the only non-academic book on her shelves, her favorite from childhood, Anne of Green Gables. On this page, Anne Shirley says to Miss Stacey, “Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it.” And thus, the tombstone was engraved with the name: Anne Shirley Finch.
121 miles - The whole drive from LA to San Diego, Millie kept her hand on Alan’s leg, while she never looked at him. She was shocked and grateful when after she has told him the whole story, he had asked to meet Anne.
Countless - The tears shed over 32 years.
