Hey all! I see lots of 'Dreamwidth' talk on my flist. I don't really understand what it is or what it's all about, but I understand it's a kind of LJ sort of thing...??

Of course I am wondering who is moving over there and what's going on so here is a wee poll as I am nosey:

OH GOD. DREAMWIDTH. I'm so over it.

My vague understanding is its "compatible" with LJ at least, so for those that care, they can x-post to both. I also gather from a fair % of my flist, most folks arent moving over there and shutting up shop here. If they have a DW, they'll keep both ... I think.

Honey, if fandom moves there, we'll still have each other yeah?

Hee, we will ALWAYS have each other ;) Are you going to open one in a just in case wait and see manner then?!

Same. Even then I'd be all 'sigh, really, I have to learn something NEW?'

DWidth looks promising, they have/are improving on LJ features (the main people are exLJ users/volunteers, irrc).

You can have a look around using your OpenId account, see here:

I've heard a lot of talk as well, but I don't know much about it. From what I understand too, you need an "invitation" or "code" to join - I'm not clear on that. So this is where I am and where I'll stay.

Right now it's in closed beta, so they are using invite codes to control the number of people using the service, and slowly increasing that number, to test things out. It's supposed to go to open beta on April 30, when it will be possible to buy an account for as little as $3/month, or use an invite code for a free account, which will be given out in copious amounts to people who are already there to distribute amongst their friends, much like LJ used to do back in the day.

Thank you for explaining - am a bit clearer now. So it will be a case of getting an invite code if one is interested I guess. Cool.

As it was explained to me

OK. There's an excellent import tool that completely transfers all your content from LJ, including userpics, posting filters, tags, etc. Any comments imported are imported as an OpenID, so your friends from here can log in there and put in userpics, or delete comments, &c ( ... )
