Hey all! I see lots of 'Dreamwidth' talk on my flist. I don't really understand what it is or what it's all about, but I understand it's a kind of LJ sort of thing...??
Of course I am wondering who is moving over there and what's going on so here is a wee poll as I am nosey:
Poll Dreamwidth...I hope y'all are okay! I am knackered so this is a fly by as I drag

OK. There's an excellent import tool that completely transfers all your content from LJ, including userpics, posting filters, tags, etc. Any comments imported are imported as an OpenID, so your friends from here can log in there and put in userpics, or delete comments, &c.
Denise is working on a crossposting tool, so I can write a post to DW, and it'll automatically post it to LJ, and I can choose whether to allow comments on the LJ post or turn them off and link to the DW post.
They've split 'friends' into subscriptions and trusted, to both reduce the drama and allow your reading page to just be "what you want to read", nice and simple.
(the stuff about APIs and similar is techy stuff--someone like LD, or me (with some help) could install the code on or own server, run a mini version of the site, and it'll talk to the main site and LJ insimilar ways.
And yes, lots of people have said they're jumping to a clonce site, then come back. This isn't a clone site, it's a fork, an improvement on LJ, and the tools they're putting in mean you won't actually leave LJ (or IJ/JF/etc), you'll just have your journal on the site that suits you best, and it'll still be readable everywhere else.
Specifically, the import tool allows you to choose what to import, so people can just set up comment accounts and import their userpics and similar.
It's designed to work with LJ, complement LJ. Perhaps most importantly, LJ is picking up on some of the stuff they're doing and bringing it here as well.
Basically, I've had a wish list of "LJ would be great if it did..." for ages now--I've even got close to self hosting my own wordpress powered blog more than once. But now, DW is doing pretty much all of my wishlist, and has a lot of the remainder on the to-do list.
So people won't leave LJ. They'll use Dreamwidth if that's what they prefer, but come back here to comment, etc--and give their money to whichever site gives them the best service. Which is good.
