those parallels were abundantly clear. and it's kind of infuriating. i mean, i guess it's a little ironic that jack essentially turned into the man for whom he was searching for so long, but it's maddening because of this: they're...given free passes to run from it. i mean, really now. i understand that they have to live with the guilt and all that, but where is there growth in escaping, in going to a place where you don't constantly see everything that has happened? there's only so much atonement in doing other deeds to find redemption while simultaneously avoiding the elephant in the room. dude, the whole solitary thing in the end has got to stop. we get it, already- the cheese stands alone. and doctor who, at least, was a children's show. what kind of message are they sending? when crappy things happen to you and yours and you may have had hand in it, you just run away

hat jack essentially turned into the man for whom he was searching for so long,
And not just searching for - hating for running. I mean, I guess after all these years he can now be all "Doctor I understand your pain" but these boys seem to have trouble learning from the past.

Which I think is just wrong on sooooo many levels, but RTD seems to be committed to this as a universal truth. It almost seem to boil down to an attempt to make us disbelieve in heroes. You know - sure they look heroic if you only see them once but once you actually know them...
I don't understand the Gwen hate either really, but I believe it's something about how she was a self-righteous prig who got a free pass whenever she made mistakes and looked down on the others when they made their own. <- That's a mash-up of a couple of posts I read back in

it's the characters that have kept ppl watching not the concept
exactly. this isn't like law and order (the original), where the cast structure and most storylines are built to accommodate rotating characters and discontinuous plots.
before the Disnification of fairy tales a lot of them ended in tragedy
oh, i know. but then we changed them for a happier ending. i guess what i meant is that if fairy tales can evolve past doom and gloom, then rtd can, too. well, in theory ;o)
Clearly I haven't watched yet (I am currently watching the finale of Angel and getting wibbly) but I honestly think I will not return to WHo next year after all DT's specials and after reading this, I don't think I'll come back to TW after these few either. Sigh. At least I am abandoning them before I become overly disillusioned and ruin the memory of the past.
Yeah, unless RTD pulls a giant pony out of his ass with the rest of the specials I'm pretty much going to be done with Who and TW too. But who am I kidding I'm a sucker for hope.
I'm not really a big fan of Moffat's playboy doctor either though because he (Moffat) doesn't really carry things over at all. I think the "I'm awesome" complex stays with Moffat, but I won't complain about losing the Lonely God complex.
it is heartbreaking but fascinating to watch Jack.
Agreed. But I really can't see, regardless of RTD, how there's going to be any more TW (that looks anything like what we've had the last 3 series) without a LOT of retcon.

You're lucky. The boys have been refusing to let me sleep past 6. I think I might need a nap now.
