Fanfiction tends to be better than published strictly romance novels: both m/m and m/f I find.

Ha! You drew me out of my LJ hibernation with this one. Yes, there are a lot of horrible m/m novels out there, which is why i never, EVER EVER jump in without a rec. I have a ton of them, really quality recs, if you want. Try anything by Harper Fox (particularly Scrap Metal), or Josh Lanyon (the Adrien English Mysteries). I really enjoy the Cut and Run series by Abigail Roux, and of course the Captive Prince by S.U. Pacat. Bonds of Earth by G.N. Chevalier is just lovely. And if you're intersted in ghosty type things, you can't beat Jordan Castillo Price's PsyCop series. Another of my favorites is Jordan Hawk's Widdershins series.

I could go on! But don't lose heart. You just need to know where to look :)

The NaNo I'm working on (which is fantasy, not romance) has a huge romantic subplot between the two MMCs. No vampires, no werewolves, no S&M, and an actual plot. I might have to add some of the recommendations you're getting to my reading list, though. :D
