This is a part of the series developing here. I seem to be jumping all over chronologically. The right order to read them at this point is: Trust, Staying Alive, Enigma, Stay, Kissing and The Truth of it and then this one. The ratings move between PG-13 and NC-17, for sex and violence.

Daniel woke abruptly, memories of the last 48 hours flooding through him in a rush. It seemed surreal, yet…he could feel a heavy arm across his chest…and the room smelled of sex. Slowly, he opened his eyes. It was still dark, and the clock beside the bed read 6:15am.

His body ached, in places due to the torture and physical exertion of the escape…in other places due to a physical exertion of another kind. He turned his head, taking in the salt and pepper head on the pillow next to his head, the hard, muscular back and arm. Daniel shook his head.

It wasn’t like it was the first time he’d woken up at Jack’s house. That made him chuckle. It wasn’t the waking up there that was surprising…maybe the part where he woke up in bed with Jack, that was certainly new.

The pile of clothes on the floor beside the bed started ringing and he grabbed for it before it woke his bed partner. Jack moaned and rolled away, his arm slithering away beneath the sheet as Daniel flipped his cell phone open. “Hello? Hey Sam. Yeah, I have that. I’ll bring it with me. No, I’m not…I stayed with Jack last night. Long story. Okay, I’ll let you know when I get in.”

Daniel put down the phone and contemplated his next move. Jack was either still asleep, or pretending to be. His alarm was due to go off soon. Daniel decided that he needed a shower before he could face the consequences of the night before, and slid out of bed.

Normally by now he was dressed and half way through his first cup of coffee of the morning, but as he padded through the silent house in an effort to collect his discarded clothing, he felt more awake than he had in a long time. He paused in the living room beside the sofa to retrieve his t-shirt, his eyes falling on a picture on the end table. It was little more than a snapshot, framed in a simple wooden frame. He and Jack smiled out at the world, frozen in time some 5 years ago or more. Jack’s arm was around his shoulder. It was a warm, affectionate memory. Daniel straightened up, his eyes sweeping around the room.

This place spoke of Jack in ways that weren’t entirely tangible. It was comfortable, familiar…and yet, suddenly it was all new too. Daniel exhaled slowly and headed for the bathroom. Everything had changed in the last 12 hours. And yet, nothing had. It wasn’t as if the groundwork for this hadn’t been laid for the last 7 years. He was still in awe that it had happened, because this was, after all Jack…and Daniel…and no one would have believed….

Daniel stepped into the shower, stretching achy muscles under the hard spray of hot water. No one would know. Not now anyway. The ramifications were extreme, even he could see that. He lathered up quickly, feeling the need to check on Jack, make sure things were okay. He rinsed even more quickly and toweled off before slipping into his jeans and t-shirt.

The bedroom was still dark and quiet. Jack’s body still filled the bed. His eyes were closed, his breathing shallow. Daniel sat next to him, one hand ghosting over his bare chest. The look on his friend’s face was more peaceful than he had seen it in years. Somehow, things were going to be fine. Slowly, Daniel leaned over and turned off the alarm that was only minutes from rousing the sleeping Colonel. After the emotional roller coaster of the last few days, Jack deserved the silence and the peace it brought.

Rising, Daniel kissed Jack’s forehead lightly and scooped up his boots and phone. In the living room, he slipped into his boots and stopped to write a brief note telling Jack he would tell the General he was taking the day off, and to call him later that afternoon.

The sun was nearly up as he let himself out of Jack’s house, into a morning that held a promise he hadn’t felt in years.
