Daniel scanned the room, though he wasn’t sure what he was looking for. His hands were bound behind his back, rolled leather cutting into his skin. His glasses were gone, his shoulder aching. He wasn’t sure what exactly had happened.
“Your friends are gone,” a voice slithered through his head. “Back through the circle.”
Daniel shook his head. No, Jack wouldn’t leave him. The motion made everything in the room dance. “You are alone.”
The voice was male, he thought, and slow…like it had been recorded at high speed and played back a notch below normal. “What do you want?” he asked, his own voice sounding low and abnormal to him.
They had to have given him something, a drug maybe…or maybe he’d hit his head a little harder than he thought when he’d fallen. Fallen, yes. He’d seen them coming, out of the corner of his eye and got between Jack and the club set to knock him out. Daniel had taken the blow in his shoulder, pushing Jack out of the way and rolling off down a steep incline, ending when his head had connected with the cold water and the rocks beneath its surface.
“We want nothing…only you.”
“You obviously already have me, so can we move on?”
A shock moved through him, making his head spin and his body shake. When it passed he was out of breath. “Okay, no sarcasm. I get that.” He tried to control his breathing. What could they mean? “What do you want me to do?”
There was a sound like laughter. “Die,” the voice said. “Slowly, alone, broken.”
The jolt came again, stronger this time, and when it had passed, Daniel lie on the floor of the cell, curled into a ball. “They will not come for you.”
“Yes, they will.” Daniel whispered. If nothing else, after everything, he knew Jack would never leave him behind. He trusted that better than he trusted himself. All he had to do was hold on.
