Sometimes, in my more brainfarty moments, I mix up Harold and Allan Bloom. This is unfortunate, since Allan Bloom was all Straussy, so I should really keep that straight if I'm going to be taken seriously when I blather about neocons. Well, from the very first part of that interview, I disagree with his thesis.

Fascism is socialism, Mussolini was a socialist, the National Socialists -- duh -- were socialists.

Duh. Nazis weren't anything resembling what we currently describe as "socialists" -- just because they threw the word in there? Hitler was as good at understanding the power of words as, apparently, Jonah Goldberg is. I haven't actually read all of 1984, but Orwell didn't just come up with the concept of "newspeak" out of thin air. If you just repeat a word enough time, it loses all meaning. When I listen to Goldberg talk about fascism, it has the same effect as if I just sat here and said "pencil" over and over until my brain went numb. As someone who is as picky about the definition of terms as you are, I'm surprised that you would let something this sloppy slide. Just a quick glance at Wikipedia provides me with a whole bunch of quotes from Hitler disavowing any connection between National Socialism and Marxism. And Orcinus, who has some super-big ( ... )
