please tv

I got around to watching the first three episodes of Grimm and basically can't shake the feeling that it's Lost Girl with all the good characters replaced with bland, generic men. Why do writers think interesting, diverse characters means manpain, being an arrogant asshole and throwing in a black guy? It pretty much guarantees that I'll be spending ( Read more... )

A friend of mine calls those type shows, "White Cock Juggernaut pairing" shows. She has a point.

Let's see... I enjoyed Call The Midwives earlier this year, which has six women in their main cast, and also Miranda Hart. And it's a few years old, but if you can lay your hands on Lilies, you might enjoy it, though it has a PTSD storyline in it and so comes with a trigger warning for that.

And now I'm wracking my brain to come up with more shows about women... but I don't remember having watched any. /o\

Fandom seems to love them. :-/ Every time I ask for tv recs people are like "Oh watch this! It's a X show about 2 guys who X" and I'm like "...." It really shouldn't be so hard to think of/find tv about women that isn't, like, along the lines of Sex and the City or Cougar Town. (Let alone shows about trans people, for which I can think of... a couple of movies?)

Yeah, I could give you a dozen shows that are like that, and well, you can find (and have found, obviously) yourself.

I do try shows that are "made for women", and I find myself running away from them a lot, too, which makes it worse because it makes the potential list so much smaller! (I tried The Good Wife, for example, which, HELL NO, I ran away from real fast.)

(coming back to say that I haven't seen it, but I've heard good things about it: Scandals?)

Well, you like Lost Girl (as do I) so may I suggest its buddy in Syfy's Monday night lineup, Eureka? Yes, men, but equally women too (you will love Jo Lupo, frex), and it's just so damn quirky and funny, I heart it so.

I second the Call the Midwives rec. Rizzoli and Isles is also awesome, and I have yet to hear anything bad from anyone about Continuum.

IDK how you feel about stuff more aimed at teens, but Make it or Break It is about a couple badass teenage girls trying to get to the olympics in gymnastics (and I just marathoned it so I'm reccing it all over the place, haha). it can be a little vapid but, well, they're 16, it happens.

haha I used to do gymnastics! It's actually why my body is so fucked now. I have Stick It on my external hard drive too, it's one of my guilty pleasure movies. "If you like to fall down, gymnastics is THE sport for you!" So fucking true.

Haha then you really may like it XD Or hate it on the basis of "That's wrong, that's wrong, that's wrong." :D

haha I watched three episodes of Continuum and then I was like "I should also try something else, I have a couple episodes of Make It or Break It down..." and then watched all of season one. It's kind of freaking me out that Summer is DJ from Full House.

You would love the awesome show I'm writing in my head! It's all about women and geeks and women geeks being kickass and nerdy! There are some guys but they don't really do much ;)

For realsies:

Someone already said Rizzoli and Isles - I don't watch it b/c I don't like cop shows/crime drama, but the 2 main femals characters are pretty cool (from what little I've seen).

Being Erica... I like this show, and I fucking LOVE the concept of the show, but there have been occasions where I absolutely hated Erica's reactions to things. Or how she handled things. And how it was portrayed that her approach was the RIGHT way. I think you'll see what I mean if you watch it. Good show, though, on many levels. 4 seasons on CBC.

Mad Men. It won't be like you haven't heard if it or considered it, but it's possible you rejected it on the description, or on the first couple episodes. I would have done the latter if I hadn't been given the DVDs. But it has some of the best character writing I've seen in ages, it has some fierce weird women, and while to an extent it is largely about a bunch of white guys and their dicks, it's also about how the world is, degree by painful degree, turning away from its complete service package for those dicks. I'd recommend it.

Is second Mad Men. Venture Brothers, for very different reasons. And Archer for the completely over the top same reason.

Disagree about Roz&Il - the scripting & characterization is awful, like most series of its ilk.

Haven't looked at R&I yet but if I do I may just get the first episode at first anyway - tv is kinda over-saturated with cop dramas after all.
