My laptop does something similar - it reboots itself randomly (actually it just did that a couple of hours ago) and sometimes it won't boot up. It will start, I can hear the fan going, but then it just shuts itself off again. I've no idea what causes it either (though it seems to happen when my room is freakishly cold), but it usually works fine if I turn the power off and back on again. Desktops would probably be more tricky though. Good luck! :/

Yeah, I was wondering if maybe it is the cold that made it go funny this morning..but I've had it for a few years & it's never done it before, even in the middle of winter (although maybe that's the problem, that I have had it for a few years..)

Random reboots are so annoying, huh? I get so paranoid about it I have to save everything every 5 mins or so..

This is not in the least helpful for solving your problem, but if the hard disk doesn't start reading then it's a hardware issue not a software one... I'd say cringe, take it to the shop and start forking over the money unfortunately...

*sympathies*

Sounds like a power plant issue to me.

I had the same problem with one of my computer when adding a secondary hard drive.

It could be the plant is loosing power off somewhere. I my case the secondary hd required more than the plant could provide. But yes take it along to a repair shop, or find someone who might know a little about such things.

The longer you leave it the worse it'll get. Hardware issues with p.c's should never be left too long
