Renji shook his head quickly and busied himself with the taiyaki. Nope. Nothing the matter here. Nothing at all.

His gaze snapped back up as Rukia took off and he turned, slowly, to look at Byakuya.

Renji licked his lips quickly, shaking his head. "No. I...I don't mind...Byakuya."

Byakuya looked down and smiled ever so slightly before shifting the teeniest bit closer to Renji.

Renji found he rather liked it.

He held up one of the taiyaki toward Byakuya and quirked an eyebrow. "You sure you don't want one? They've got red bean paste in 'em."

Smirking slightly, Renji held the treat up to Byakuya's lips, waiting expectantly.

Byakuya hesitantly opened his mouth and took a small bite, licking his lips after.

After swallowing, he looked sideways at Renji.

Renji smirked and popped the rest of the treat into his mouth before licking off his fingers slowly.

Where they were and what they were doing finally caught up to Byakuya. He started to slip his hand from Renji's, half-hoping Renji would let him go, half-hoping he wouldn't.

"...Renji..I--"

Renji tightened his hold on Byakuya's hand and shook his head.

"Don't do this. Don't give me a little and then take it all away again. Either stick to it or just stop."

Byakuya gave a shaky, sad smile, squeezing Renji's hand lightly.

"...I'm not strong enough for this."

"No? You're a hell of a lot stronger than me." Renji lifted their hands and leaned his head forward, dropping a kiss to the back of Byakuya's hand.

"But...y'know, this is why it's a...thing. For two people. When one stumbles, the other is there, right?"

Byakuya shifted and leaned forward to rest his forehead on Renji's shoulder, not caring if anyone saw them like this. He just kept hearing Renji's words over and over again.

"...Renji," he said, voice full of things he wanted to say, but could not figure out how to say them.

Well, that certainly not what he hadn't been expecting. Renji lifted his free hand and placed it at the back of Byakuya's hair, toying with a few black strands.

"Byakuya."

Byakuya didn't move from his position, enjoying the feel of Renji's fingers in his hair. He stayed silent as well, not wanting to say anything in case he hurt Renji further. Byakuya knew he was already, and didn't understand why Renji still tried with him.

Renji gnawed on his bottom lip briefly before nudging Byakuya's head up. Quickly, he leaned his head in and placed a brief, fluttering kiss to Byakuya's lips.
