Renji led Byakuya up to the fireworks viewing area and looked around. There wasn't a terrible amount of people there, which was promising. He made his way over to a tree and sat down, leaning back against it. His eyes danced skyward and he nodded.

"This should be nice."

Byakuya stayed standing next to Renji for a few seconds, just watching as Renji leaned back against the tree. He seemed more relaxed now, to Byakuya, and that made him glad.

Sitting down next to him, Byakuya tentatively looped his arm around Renji's, and rested his head against Renji's shoulder.

"It is."

Renji sank against the tree and kind of dropped his head to the side, resting it on top of Byakuya's head.

Sure. He can do this, too.

Byakuya leaned in even closer, tilting his head down to place a small kiss on Renji's collarbone.

Why, yes, he IS the tiniest bit red, why do you ask?

Renji lifted a hand and toyed with a bit of black hair.

Renji shivered slightly at the air that ghosted over his skin so, so lightly.

Byakuya smiled.

"Nothing really. I just wanted to say your name." He reached up and played with the end of Byakuya's braid. "This is a nice change, Renji."

Well, Byakuya was being thoroughly confusing. But it was a nice sort of confusing. Maybe.

Byakuya could feel Renji smile above him and his throat move as he talked.

"Both, I suppose," he replied, the hand that was playing with Renji's braid stopping to rest on the other's chest.

"...Renji?" Byakuya asked, serious. "Before I change my mind...if I ever have doubts again, because I know I will, will you not give up? As long as you're sure that who you want is me, will you not listen to what I say?"

Renji tipped his head to the side as he gazed down at Byakuya and smiled slightly.

"Abarai Renji never gives up."

His eyes darted around quickly before he leaned down, placing his lips against Byakuya's.

Hearing Renji say those words made Byakuya feel a sense of relief that he hadn't felt for years - for decades. After Hisana passed away, Byakuya never found anyone else that made him feel safe - until Renji became his fukutaichou. He trusted Renji.

Byakuya leaned into the kiss, making it deeper. He wanted Renji to know that he wanted to be here. Wanted this. Wanted them. That there wasn't any regrets at that moment.

Renji let out a tiny breath as Byakuya pressed into him and he brought up a hand, placing it along Byakuya's jaw. His thumb traced lightly over Byakuya's cheek as he returned the kiss, glad to feel his taichou so relaxed.

It was definitely a nice change.

Byakuya smiled into the kiss before pulling back, looking into Renji's eyes. Then, he went on to place tiny, soft kisses over and over again on Renji's mouth. The corners, the top lip, the bottom lip.

A soft sight left Renji at the little kisses and he smiled as he wound a bit of hair around his fingers. He brought his head back and and gazed down at Byakuya in silence for a moment.

"...God I'm lucky."

Byakuya's fingers traveled along Renji's face, over his eyes, his nose, his cheeks, his mouth.

"Renji..I-" Byakuya stopped suddenly, distracted by watching Renji.
