Guys. Guuuuys. I am so bored. My whole week was spent trying to get myself in shape for a chemistry exam, and now that it's over my brain is mush and I don't know what to do with myself. Which obviously means it's time to dick around on the internet and prattle at length about dumb stuff for a while. NOW I HAVE A PLAN.

Magical things await you! )

Oh dear god don't even get me STARTED on how Disney films are now. Declaring 2D dead was the last straw, though I am hypocritically rooting for the Princess and the Frog. My career probably depends on its success, unless I decide to bring the medium back on my own. Ambitious? You bet. But hey, Brad Bird said that he'd invent movies if it came down to that...

Yeah, I think by the time Brother Bear rolled around I realized that Disney films were going to be pretty much made of suck from here on out (though I wasn't crazy about Tarzan, either). And yeah, throwing out 2D animation to make space for more dead, plastic-y cold CG is the icing on the failcake.

I'm not expecting great things from the Princess and the Frog, though I'll admit a lot of that stems from all the speculation that going on about it, and people pinning all their hopes and dreams of the first black princess. Milestone or not, given Disney's recent track record, I will be very surprised if the movie has any lasting value. But yeah, tl;dr, at least it's 2D so I hope it doesn't tank.

You'll just have to start your own studio, if it comes down to it. :]

I'm not quite sure why, but I actually liked Brother Bear despite the severely lacking soundtrack and completely unnecessary moose characters. Maybe because it was a love story that didn't involve a guy and a girl snogging in the end, I don't know. It makes me cry every damn time I see it, which sort of pisses me off because I don't like crying, but it's the one I have former Disney animators autograph when I go about meeting them. Sentimental value, I guess.

Totally with you on CG though. Cold, unfeeling...and it requires you to really be more of a technician than an animator. The software provides too much of a barrier between what you see in your head and what you put onscreen. Maya is made of evil, Max isn't much better, and there is hardly any drawing involved. The reason Pixar does so well, I think, is because they force their animators to draw everything out first before they even touch a computer.

And even Pixar's going down the tubes, I think. Up doesn't seem to be taking any risks with character design, technique ( ... )

The soundtrack and the lack of focus (wtf was up with those moose, anyway? Just because the movie wasn't funny doesn't mean it needed random comic relief) pretty much killed it for me. I did appreciate that the story was about familial bonds rather than romantic ones, but I was honestly pretty distracted by the jarring, crappy pop music and kind of weird pacing. Also, Phil Collins: you're no Elton John. And at least when Elton John did a soundtrack it was integrated into the movie. Which isn't Collins' fault, but stillI went to Atlantis not long after that, left the theater remembering basically nothing about the movie, and decided me and Disney were kind of done. I LOVED YOU, BABY. YOU'RE LIKE A STRANGER TO ME NOW ( ... )
