Dreaming in the Waking World
In her dreams, Pansy doesn’t steal Luna’s things; she hides them. The forest leaves are slick with rain and moonlight, and they cling to her robes as she skirts through the brush silently. (Though in the waking world, she lacks the skill to do so.)
Everything is in shades of blue. Every color is like a different layer, as if the moon, piled on top of itself a thousand times, would become the darkness in the sky; the lake would be somewhere in between, but it is outside the forest, outside of sight, and Pansy does not think of it while her feet touch the deep sapphire of the earth. (In the waking world, it is Luna who speaks in paints and colors.)
She slips into the forest with belongings that are not hers, finding nooks and crannies of varied hues in which to bury them. From each hiding place, Pansy leaves a trail of breadcrumbs. (Because in both worlds, Luna cannot resist them.) They gleam in the same almost-white as the moon and stars, little freckles on the ground like secrets.
Luna always comes soon after, cloaked in velvet and bare feet that skip. She is careful to never step on the trail, always around it, never disturbing its constellations. The smile at the corners of her lips widens every time her searching fingers find her old, familiar friends, pulled from hollow logs or beneath the sleeping caps of mushrooms. She holds them to her chest, eyes delighted but serene as she looks up, and Pansy holds her breath and darts to further cover.
Someday, in either world, Pansy will secret herself away, and leave a trail of breadcrumbs leading to her open heart. For now, though, she simply watches through the trees, preparing for the day she will let herself be found.
