The Play's the Thing...

At shortly after midday today I unplugged the phone, turned off my laptop, then bolted my door before sitting down to three hours and three minutes of the RSC/Illuminations film of David Tennant's 'Hamlet'. Below the cut are my thoughts on it (I missed the live television broadcast, unfortunately, owing to family Christmas commitments, so this is ( Read more... )

Thanks. I'm sure I will be utterly fascinated by the extras. Of course, I need another 3 hours and 3 mins to listen to the audio commentary! o_O

Oh, thanks for the review! I've been wondering if I should get the DVD, so this is really good to know. It's not out in region 1 format and I don't know if it ever will be, but I am in the process of acquiring a region-free DVD player -- once I do, I think this will be my first DVD for it!

I strongly recommend the Philips/Magnavox DVD players in the $45-65 price range. If you look them up in advance for the exact model #s, most of the ones at Walmart/Target/Best Buy are hackable to multi-region and PAL/NTSC. They last reasonably well (1-2 year) and play .avi files on home-burned disks. Many also now have a USB port and will play .avi and .wmv files from memory stick as well. We've loved ours!

And example is the Philips DVP5990 series, and the hacking codes are here.

Well they're airing it on PBS in April, so I'm assuming the R1 DVD will be out after that...

Well, of course: In a contemporary modern-dress Hamlet, the solioquies must be captured on camcorder. For his videoblog.
We've downloaded Hamlet, and were saving it because scarfmom likes us not to have already seen what we watch together on Fridays. But she released us this week so we'll be looking at it soon. It's great to hear from someone who saw it onstage that the screen version does it justice.

LOL Good point! Shame we don't *have* any video diaries on this!

The screen version can definitely be compared favourably with the stage version. I think they did a beautiful job on it and can be justifiably proud.

I've...acquired this one, and still need to watch it. Sounds like I need to snag it on DVD when it's out over here, too.

*nods* I think it's worth it if you like Tennant and/or Shakespeare.

The R1 DVD should be out sometime after PBS screens it in April...

My PBS affiliate's crap. I'd be surprised if they broadcast anything that wasn't Andre Rieu or Celtic Woman...

Excellent review. I have to say I agree with everything you said. Especially the use of the meta cameras which made it much more sinister and having close ups of DT which allowed us to see even more of his emotions.

I can't wait for it to air here in April to see what the American response to it is.

Yes, the CCTV was very sinister and disturbing... And very cleverly done when we saw Horatio and co from the CCTV's PoV and could *not* see the Ghost!

I hope the Americans view it favourably...
