When Martha got back to the Med Bay she saw that the Doctor had moved off the floor to sit on the bed. He smiled at her when she walked in and held out a hand to her.

"Dr Jones, thank you for you help," he said as she took his hand in hers.

She shrugged. "I didn't do much."

"You were here for River, though, and I appreciate that. I'm sorry we burst in on you," he looked her up and down as if only now taking in her attire, "and we wrenched you from your bed too." He looked genuinely remorseful.

"It's okay," she said.

"I need to go to the wardrobe and find some new clothes," he said, "will you come with me, and then we'll get out of your way?"

"Are you fit enough to be up and about?" Martha asked immediately.

"I think so," he answered, "but if I'm not, at least I'll have my Doctor with me to scold me."

She laughed and shook her head. "I swear you get more incorrigible with each new incarnation."

He grinned at her. "But you still love me, don't you?"

She realised with surprise that his tone was anxious as he asked this question. "Of course," Martha answered. "You're still you, no matter how your body looks."

He gave her a pleased look, then pulled her to stand between his legs so that he could hug her. "Martha Jones, I am deeply grateful for the fact that you're such a smart, sensible woman."

She ducked her head, embarrassed, and he put a finger under her chin to tilt her face back up. "And you are, and always will be, my girl."

He moved his hands up to cup her face and then kissed her, reminding Martha of the time his tenth incarnation had kissed her on the Moon. As then, their kiss was what she thought of as a 'toe curler': deep, intense and very satisfying.

When he finally released her Martha gave him a rather dazed look. "This is getting to be a habit with you," she observed. "The first time I met your tenth incarnation you kissed me, and then your eleventh incarnation did too, the first time I met him."

"Maybe it's because you're so kissable?" he suggested, grinning impishly.

"Or maybe it's because you're a kiss slut?" she retorted, but she couldn't resist grinning back.

His grinned widened. "Well, my tenth incarnation was a bit of a 'kiss slut' as you call it, but my eleventh wasn't. There were only three women in his life: you, the TARDIS and River."

Martha's smile faded and she started to pull away from him, feeling uneasy, but he caught hold of her shoulders and stopped her.

"It's okay," he said softly. "You know how things are between you and Tom, and you and Jack? Well - "

She cut him off. "How do you know how things are between me and Tom and Jack?" she demanded. "I haven't discussed it with anyone else."

He smiled gently. "I know, because you'll tell me," he answered, "when we take the trip that leads to my regeneration into my eleventh self."

She sighed. "Wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey."

He laughed softly. "Got it in one Dr Jones. Anyway, that relationship you have with Tom and Jack is the sort of relationship that River and I share: we aren't exclusive to each other. You, Jack and River taught me that it was far better to share with each other than to make yourself miserable by being exclusive to just one person, especially if you're a time traveller."

"Jack and I?" Martha repeated, sounding doubtful.

The Doctor nodded and she raised an eyebrow quizzically. "I can't tell you any more," he reminded her.

"I know," she sighed. "But it's incredibly frustrating of you to make these elliptical statements and then leave me waiting to find out what they mean."

"I know," he answered. "Come on, let's go and look at the wardrobe, and distract ourselves."

Martha stepped back and he slid off the bed, then slipped his hand into hers and led her through the corridors, then up the spiral staircases into the wardrobe levels of the ship. She had to concede that the wardrobe was a very distracting place, with so many fascinating items of clothing that had been worn by earlier incarnations of the Doctor and his various companions.

"I think I'm going to go for a more casual look this time around," he told Martha. "Time for jeans again, I think, rather than the suits, unless it's a special occasion of course."

"I somehow can't picture you in jeans," she said, trying and failing to do just that.

"Well in a few minutes, you won't have to, you'll be able to see it for yourself. Ah! Here we are." He delved into a rack of clothes and pulled out two hangers with long sleeved shirts on, one white and the other sky blue.

Before he could ask, Martha took the hangers from him, and he smiled at her, the sort of smile his tenth incarnation gave her when she'd done something he approved of, and she felt as if she might melt.

He gave her a wink, as if he knew what she was thinking, then turned to open a chest of drawers from which he pulled a pair of black jeans, which Martha also took from him. Next he scooped up a pair of chunky black boots, and then he delved into another rack before pulling out a light grey jacket that was vaguely reminiscent of the one that John Smith had worn in 1913.

"There we go," he said. "I think I'm all set."

He slipped off his black suit jacket and put it on a hanger, then unbuttoned his shirt and removed that before taking the white shirt from Martha; she closed her eyes while he swapped his suit trousers for the jeans.

"There we are," he said, sounding very pleased.

She opened her eyes and swallowed hard, feeling herself beginning to blush. She'd always thought the Doctor looked sexy in a suit, but she had to concede that he looked equally as sexy in his jeans.

"Very nice," she said.

The Doctor gave her a wolfish grin and she felt her face heating up even more.

"I should let you go back to bed," he said, and she wondered if she was imagining the regret in his voice.

She nodded. "I do have to go to work again this morning," she said.

He took the blue shirt on its hanger from her and they went back downstairs, heading towards the Control Room.

"How much longer will you be driving back and forth to Cardiff?" he asked.

"Only a couple more months, until Dr Palmer's settled in, and then I shall just go down once a month unless there's anything significant going on. Jack's still trying to recruit another person to the team, which would take some of the pressure off him, too, if there were five of them instead of just three."

"Maybe I'll come and see you again in a couple of months then, and we can go on a little trip together."

Martha gave him a surprised look. "Wouldn't that be paradoxical though?"

He shook his head. "Don't worry, I'll be careful."

"I'd like that," she said softly.

"Good." The Doctor draped the shirt on its hanger over the back of the Captain's chair, then wrapped his arms around her again. "I have a strong desire, you see Dr Jones, to have you all to myself for a bit."

"You really are incorrigible," she said.

"Yep!" He gave her his wolfish grin again and Martha decided that she really should go back to bed in her own bed in her own flat or there would be no telling what she might do if he continued looking at her in that way.

"I must go," she told him.

"I know," he answered, then dipped his head to give her another kiss. "I'll be back to see you soon, Martha Jones. This me, that is, so take good care of yourself, please."

"I will. And you take care of yourself, eh?"

He nodded. "I'll do my best." He kissed her forehead, then released her.

Martha squeezed his fingers, then let herself out of the TARDIS. As she got back into bed and heard the ship dematerialising, she couldn't help wondering what Jack would have to say when she told him about her midnight encounter.

"I can't wait to see his face tomorrow," she thought with a soft chuckle just before she slipped back into sleep.
