Index Post ~~~~~~
The following week, when Martha was in London again, going through some reports on Project Indigo, she got a phone call from Sarah Jane Smith.
"Hello, Sarah Jane," Martha said warmly. She and the older woman had exchanged phone numbers and email addresses in the wake of the business with the Daleks, and although they hadn't yet had a chance to meet up for coffee as they'd hoped to do, they had begun an email conversation, swapping stories and notes. Martha had also persuaded Sarah Jane to promise that she'd ring the young doctor if ever she was faced with something she and the teenagers couldn't deal with alone, or if they needed medical assistance and didn't want to go to a hospital for some reason.
"Martha, sorry to ring you at work, but I need your help." Sarah Jane sounded so anxious that the young doctor immediately guessed that something had happened to Luke or one of the others.
"What's wrong?" she asked, her tone calm and soothing.
"It's Clyde, Luke's friend. They were playing football in one of the parks near here and when they got back he complained of feeling sick, and now he's passed out and I have no idea what's wrong."
"Okay, Sarah Jane, take a deep breath. I'll be with you as soon as I can, but in the meantime, will you please ask Luke where exactly they were playing football, and if Clyde ate or touched anything unusual?"
Martha was already heading out of her lab towards the car park as she spoke to Sarah Jane, her phone in one hand and her medical field kit in the other. She listened to the murmur of indistinct voices as Sarah Jane spoke to Luke.
"Martha? Luke says there was an unusual looking plant at the edge of the field where they were playing football, something he didn't recognise, and you know what an encyclopaedic mind he's got. Apparently Clyde may have touched it when he went to fetch the ball after it was kicked over there.
"Then that could be the culprit," Martha said. "I'll dispatch some of my UNIT squad to check it out while I come over and see Clyde."
"You've got your own squad now?" asked Sarah Jane, a teasing note in her voice.
The young doctor was relieved that her friend was able to tease her, believing that she must be feeling less anxious now she knew help was on its way. Either that or she was using humour to cover her anxiety as Martha herself was prone to do; she suspected it was a habit they'd both picked up from the Doctor.
"Eight men and women ready to obey my every command," Martha answered, trying to make it sound like a joke, but not sure if she'd succeeded.
"That's a tough responsibility," Sarah Jane commented.
"Yeah." She opened her car door and dumped her bag on the passenger seat, then got in. "Okay Sarah Jane, I'm on my way, and I should be with you in half an hour or less."
"Thanks Martha."
She hung up and the young doctor immediately radioed to Corporal Payne and told her to take three of the squad to investigate the plant. "Don't handle it with your bare hands," Martha told her. "Make sure you're wearing thick gloves if you do touch it, although for the moment, I'd rather you just ensure that no one else touches it."
"Yes ma'am."
Martha concentrated on driving as fast as she safely could through the streets from UNIT HQ to Bannerman Road. At times like this she couldn't help wishing that she was allowed to use Project Indigo, but the lab techs still had her testing it under controlled conditions.
She pulled up in Sarah Jane's drive and grabbed her bag before hurrying to the front door.
The older woman looked very anxious when she answered the door. "Thank goodness you're here," she said, "he's delirious now."
"Where is he?" asked Martha.
"He collapsed in the kitchen," Sarah Jane answered, leading the way through the wide hall and into the kitchen where a black teenage boy was lying in the recovery position on the floor.
"Where's Luke?" asked Martha as she knelt beside the patient to look closely at the purple swellings on his neck.
"Upstairs with Mr Smith, trying to identify the plant he saw."
"Mr Smith?" The young doctor glanced up as she pulled on a pair of latex gloves then donned a face mask.
"The alien computer in my attic, I call it Mr Smith," Sarah Jane answered.
Martha noted a faint blush on her friend's cheeks as she began taking items from her field kit which she'd set down on the floor beside her, and filed that observation away for future consideration before she turned her full attention to Clyde.
To be continued tomorrow...
