"There you are, Jo," said the man who'd opened the TARDIS door. "What possessed you to run out of the TARDIS like that?"
Jo mumbled something indistinct and the brown-haired man in the frilly shirt and velvet jacket turned his attention to Martha.
"Thank you, my dear, for bringing Jo back to me." He smiled, which transformed his face, with its sharp eyes and beaky nose, and Martha felt a flutter in her stomach and couldn't help thinking, Here we go again, because clearly a nice smile on a man standing in front of the TARDIS was a devastating combination for her.
"I'm the Doctor, by the way," he said, holding out a hand which Martha shook.
"You don't remember me, then?" she asked, hoping it wasn't obvious how hurt she felt by his lack of recognition.
His gaze sharpened. "I don't know you, do I?" he asked.
"I'm Martha, Dr Martha Jones, one of your companions," she answered.
"You'd better come in," he said.
The young doctor nodded, feeling rather blank, and helped Jo inside, but they had only taken a few steps inside when Martha stopped, staring in shock at the unfamiliar interior.
"What - ?" she began feeling a wave of sorrow overtake her at the sight of the stark white walls, so different to the gold-lit organic interior with which she was familiar.
"Explanations shortly, my dear," he said, and gestured towards a door on the far side of the Control Room which she guessed led to the ship's interior. "Shall we?"
Martha nodded and helped Jo across the room and through into the corridor on the other side of the door, following the Doctor at a somewhat slower pace. She could feel that Jo was leaning heavily against her now, and wondered if she was okay.
They reached the Med Bay, which was recognisable, even if some of the equipment looked different, and the Doctor lowered a bed, so that Martha could help Jo to sit down.
"I'm afraid you must be rather puzzled," he said. "You see, I'm not the Doctor you know, and since I've no recollection of meeting you, I think you must know a later incarnation of me."
"Oh!" Martha felt a huge surge of relief at this revelation.
He gave her his devastating smile again. "Jo and I were caught in a reverse chronol distortion, which had the effect of ageing Jo several decades, and de-ageing my outward form by several decades. I need to give us both an injection to reverse the distortion, but it will take Jo rather longer to recover than I, since she will need to sleep off the effects. Different physiologies, you see."
Martha nodded and watched as he made Jo comfortable, then gave her an injection. She couldn't help noticing the tender way he spoke to his companion, comforting her in what was undoubtedly a frightening situation.
Once Jo was looking young again and sleeping soundly, the Doctor gave himself the injection, then he offered Martha his arm. "Let's go and have some tea," he suggested, "and we can talk."
By the time they reached the kitchen, the Doctor had white hair, instead of brown, and there were more lines on his face, giving it character. She sat at the kitchen table and watched as he made a pot of tea and found some biscuits, while he talked of the reverse chronol distortion and its effects on the physiology of various species.
"Now then, tell me a bit about yourself," he invited, taking the seat next to Martha and passing her a cup of tea.
"I'm currently working for UNIT, and as their liaison with Torchwood," she told him, prompting him to ask about the set-up of UNIT in Martha's time, which then led into a discussion of the Sontarans, and before she knew it, Martha found they'd been talking for an hour and a half.
"I must thank you, my dear, for such an interesting and stimulating conversation," the Doctor said after Martha, albeit reluctantly, said she ought to be on her way again. "It's good to know that my future self maintains links with UNIT, and good to know that I have such capable friends working there."
Martha felt herself beginning to blush and thanked her darker skin for hiding it. She rather liked this incarnation of the Doctor: he was suave, but also caring, judging not just by the way he'd behaved towards Jo, but by some of the stories he'd told her of Liz Shaw (a name she knew in another context), Zoe and Jamie, to name but three of his previous companions.
"Thank you for the tea," she said; they had reached the TARDIS doors by now.
"Thank you, my dear, for finding Jo and bringing her back to me. I'm deeply grateful that she ran into you rather than someone else."
Martha nodded and offered him a hand to shake, starting slightly when he took her hand in both of his, squeezing her fingers and patting the top of her hand.
"Take care of yourself, my dear," he said, then kissed her fingers before opening the door for her.
It was a rather flustered Martha Jones who made her way back to her car, and she couldn't help wondering what Jack would make of her encounter - she thought he'd tease her, or the Doctor she knew, for that matter.
